Free Goodies For You! Get Your Free Goodies Here!
Hi guys, I’m Kris. Welcome to this week’s tutorial. Let’s draw together.
In this week’s tutorial, I’ll be drawing some Hibiscus and Plumeria. A little tropical bouquet in Procreate, so I’m sure you can create this too if you follow along, all the way to the end. So if you feel rushed, don’t worry about it, just hit pause and rewind to catch up or save this video to your library so you can get some practice in. Today we’ll be using all free brushes found in Procreate and don’t forget, once you’ve finish this entire video, to share it on Instagram, tag me in the image, as well as the description, so I can find your artwork and feature you here in the next Draw It Together video. So for this video, as always I’ve made you a color pallet just in case you wanna use the same colors as me, you don’t have to, certainly, but if you do, that’s there for you in the description below. And also below you’ll find a link to the goodie bag, were you can grab some free goodies and support me by visiting my shop there and see what’s going on.
So I’ve made my canvas at 4000 x 4000 pixels, sRGB and 300 DPI. So let’s jump in, I’m just gonna grab some black and start sketching, so I’m just gonna go to my sketching in my brushes library here and just grab my 6B, I have it at about 60%, hopefully you can see that and we’re just gonna get started by doing some basic shapes. So first with our flowers, I’m just gonna sort of map them out where I want them to go, I’m gonna have one sort of on an angle here, one over here. Sort of cozying up together. I don’t know, something like all these little guys tucked in here. Maybe some guys over there. Maybe my leaves come out here and here, there maybe a little… I don’t know how I want it to go. Little scoop there. Already, I’m making a nice old mess and that’s great.
But I’m gonna just figure out where my center points are, so I wanna just set it back a little bit, not quite so on the center, and just sort of figure out where everything is gonna be. So the little stamen part is gonna be there. I’m gonna bring my first leaf like this, and this guy will be like, in here, this guy will be saved there, I think that will overlap that way. I’m just gonna make sure that… Oops, sorry. Make sure you know where that’s overlapping there. And this guy will be like that and this one will be sort of in the back. Just make sure I’ve got that, like so. Okay. Next this guy, will be sort of… There’ll be a different… There’s kind of two sorts of looking Hibiscus that I’ve found that one’s a little bit more frillier than the other. One has a little bit of a different center. So let’s see what we can do with this. This guy, it’s gonna sort of scoop like that, I’ll have a leaf coming out, this is a little bit more frilly one. Hopefully you can follow along with this, I feel like this is really messy, but it will become clear in a bit. So maybe he’ll be like that, come over here, and he’ll be like sort of here, something like that. And let’s see, this guy is coming around here. One in the back. Okay, so that’s gonna connect like that. So you see that sort of a fold over and that’s underneath. If that makes any sense. And that’s gonna come up around there. Okay, again, sorry, this looks very messy.

Let’s just start making sense of this all. Okay, so here are these… Oh gosh, what are these called? Oh, Plumeria. That’s what it is, Plumeria. So they’re pretty simple, they’re kind of like, almost like little star shapes, I kinda think sometimes. So they have a center. But their center sort of wraps, it’s not really like a dot. Sort of maybe like a pinwheel, maybe that would be a better way to describe it. Alright, and then I’ll have some Plumeria leaves like this… Oops. This and that’ll come out like that. Okay, so there’s that. This guy is gonna be one of those pokey looking plants, so I’ll just have… I’m not gonna draw them all in right now, but we know what it’s going to be like, just gonna do sort of the general direction of the dots there. This is gonna come down and it’s gonna be one of these very tropical looking leaves. So I am going to do kind of like that.
And it’s kind of like they’ve been… They’ve got little holes in them. So once I kinda have a shape, I can just grow it in easily, make my lines here. And sometimes they have little holes in the middle, so you can add those. They’re fairly irregular and again, the little holes make all the difference, makes it look really cool. Okay, so you can kinda see how that would work, sort of. Alright and then this, this is more of a banana leaf, it’s gonna kinda come in like that a little bit… A little bit frilly. Okay, and I’m just gonna do some more type of Plumeria leaves, so just the smaller version, smaller variation and they always have five leaves, so make sure you get that in there. There may be one over here. I’m telling you to get five, but I’m not gonna do it. I’m gonna have to make sure I’ve got them in here. There we go.
Okay, that’s probably good for our very rough sketch here. My goodness. I hope, I’m just kind of showing you how I normally do it, that this is sort of how I map something out. It’s messy, it’s not pretty, but it gets the job done. So let’s go and knock this old pastie back. Just hit click on the end and bring it back to about, I don’t know, 20% or so, and just add a new layer by hitting that plus sign. So I’m gonna go and grab my colors here. I’m gonna start with this flower. It’s going to be orange, so I’m gonna grab that orange. And I’m just going to… Let’s go and grab my favorite pen, I’m gonna go to inking and dry ink. And I’m going to have that at higher than that. I’m gonna have it more at 8%. That’s better, okay. So I’m just gonna bring out this stamen here and it’s gonna have sort of these little bumpies, so make it quite bumpy, like that. And then it has little circlies at the top. Okay, and then we’re gonna do the leaves. You are gonna push the front pressures on your brush and just keep it a little bit loose, make the little folds and just be lighter, a little bit lighter pressure, a little bit heavier, and just to make it a little bit irregular. Maybe make some ripples, so you can have a bit of folds.
That’s gonna come in there. Okay, this guy’s gonna be in front. And this one will be in the back. Okay, so if I turn off the layer below, you can be a little bit easier. So you have our shape. We’ve got five petals. And now I’m gonna make them look a little bit more like petals. So you can do that by bringing these… Just taking a line here… Oops. Taking a line and just pushing a little bit in and gently bringing it towards the center, and then just sort of making it look like that these little creases. All making sure that it goes towards the center, so you have that direction right. And you can bring some out from the center as well, just push that back and push this part down. And we will do that with our line work as well as with our colors. I’m just gonna bring these in. So you can see it’ll start to look a little more petal-like. Maybe a little curve. Just make sure that that makes sense, that line, that they’re going in the same direction.
Okay, so you can see we’ve brought this mess, which you can’t really tell what it is, to that. So that makes more sense, and that will look a lot better when we color it in. Okay, so let’s get to the next flower. So I’m gonna do that on another layer. You don’t have to. It’s just how I like to work. It’s just my personal preference. I love layers. If you’ve watched this channel for a little bit, you’ll know that. It’s just so I can go back and make any color changes that I need to. So I’ve gone in and grabbed my dark purple, here. We’re gonna make this next hibiscus purple. It’s a little bit different, a little less structured than this, a little bit looser and frillier. So let’s see if we can manage that. So the center point on this one is a little bit different. It’s a little bit thicker and wider, so that’s just… And it doesn’t have these little doodads at the end there. So I’m just doing little sort of C shapes, sort of numbly bits to make this in here. Maybe a little bit heavier on one side, just to create that sort of shadow look. Maybe a little lighter, maybe some dots on the other side, just to fill it in.
Okay, so I’m just going to bring up this. It’s gonna be a little frilly bit here. It’s gonna come… Oops. Come in behind here. And this is gonna come up here, and little wigglies here, kinda give that a little depth there. And let’s see, kinda like how we did those fish tails last week. It’s a similar kind of design I’m doing with the edges. So I told you last week, they’re meant to look a little bit flower like, their tails. So that’s kind of what I meant by that. Alright, this is gonna be straight, and then this is gonna be wiggly. And it’s gonna come up and over here. And bringing in the underneath part, so you could see how it folds over, hopefully. And let’s just get this guy underneath while we’re here, as well.
Okay, so that’s good. And this, let’s see how I’m doing this, this leaf is coming around here, it’s gonna make it go on that little edge there. Put some difference here, and I’ll bring these edges here just to make it look like it’s the under side. Okay. Alright. So that guy has always leaves on and I’m gonna turn this off for you so we can go in and see it again, with all the lines. So just gonna bring this in. I’m just trying to decide which way I wanted to curve, if I want it to go more this way. Opps.
And that leaf will just kind of be in behind here as well, just to fill in that gap. I think that’ll look nice. Okay, so we have our two main flowers. Now let’s go and do those Plumeria here. So, we can sort of see them. Let’s add a new layer just by hitting the plus sign, and I’m going to just grab… Actually, you know what, I’m gonna use a brown here. We’re gonna add this ’cause they’re gonna be white, so I’m just gonna outline them with brown. So these ones go like this. You’re gonna have this little lip here. You’ll see what I mean in a second. That’ll go into there, and then just make it a lip like that. Okay, so the next one is just gonna go like that, and if we can see about that, a little lip there. Let’s just get this guy. That’s what sort of gives them their look. And that’s gonna tuck under there, okay? So let’s see, you can see that? And, oops, I missed a line. There, that’ll make more sense.
And next, we’re gonna have this one, it’s gonna be a little bit different because I wanna have one of these just make sort of a… Oh, I don’t know what shape this would be. Like that. Oops, just make a little shape like this here, hopefully you can see this. A little wiggle, a little bump, and around, and then we’re gonna bring this line in here. And it will have a little lip. This in here, it will too, so you can see that’s the one we’re going from an angle, so hopefully that works out for you there. I’m gonna give that a little lip there. Okay. So, hopefully, that makes sense. Alright, let’s just get these little guys in here, and then we can get to our leaves next.
Alright, so let’s take a look. Okay. Next, we will go on to our leaf layer, so I’m gonna hit that plus sign again and just grab the dark green and start doing this. So this guy is pretty straightforward, just a bunch of spikes, so just start with your main one that way, and then from there, just to make sure that you know that this line is here. Actually, we can just draw it in. I’m just gonna draw it on the one side because we might have some of these bumps, little overlapping a little bit and let’s just see. So I can kind of have them coming out from there.
Alright. And then let’s go to this guy, and let’s just do the outline first and then I’ll do the inside, I think. Let’s just outline.
Okay I’m gonna come in here and just give him a little veining here, so the veins are just gonna go sort of loose up here. I’m actually gonna make them so I can color them in. That’s a little thick to me. Why can’t I get this?
Okay, that should be fine. Let’s have a look. Okay, just made a line there. Alright, and last leaf. I’m just gonna bring in the vein here and then work off of that, so that’s just gonna be… Some of the lines here, it’s a little bit of a shaggy one, and it’s kind of like a brush, sort of. And give it some breaks, like here are some gaps, something like that, and then just giving that back side a little bit. So lets turn this off so you can see better, just some of the wispy lines here. Okay, so now we have our outline ready to go, so now I’m just gonna fill it in really quick I’ll probably just speed that up, and all I’m gonna do is go underneath each layer, so I’m gonna select the layer below my orange, I’m gonna create a new layer. I’m gonna grab the yellow, and then I’m gonna go to my studio pen, just ’cause it’s a solid, any solid fill brush will do, and I’m just gonna go in and fill it in.
I’m gonna go to the layer below my purple one and grab a new layer and that light purple, and the same thing. Actually, I’m gonna grab this, these two layers and bring them below that yellow one, ’cause that needs to tuck in behind there, so make sure you do that first, otherwise, you’re gonna be coloring on top. Okay next, I’m gonna draw up my background layer, so you can see this. I’m going to actually bring this below the purple layer as well, and just put a new layer and grab the white to do these Plumeria.
Okay, we go and then we’ll bring our leaves down to the very bottom and create a new layer and grab the lighter green, and then we can just go and fill this all in.
So we have all our fills in, so we’re ready to just paint it up a little bit more. So I’m gonna go over top, add a new layer and let’s just get these old stamens in here looking a little better. So I’m gonna just color them white right now, just fill those in, or still these with… I have my studio pen, you could use the ink brush too if you wanted. Create another layer. Okay, so now we can see those a little bit better, then let’s just get to making these look a little nicer so on top of the yellow layer, I’m going to create a new layer and do a clipping mask and grab this pink color to start. I’m gonna go into my brushes and grab the… Where I’m I gonna go? I’m gonna go to painting, if I can see it, painting and grab the gouache, gouache is gonna be at… I wanna say five. No, let’s say 15 and just lightly start to create some depth in the center and it’s gonna have some other colors. Let’s see what happens when we click on the end and turn this to multiply, so I kinda like that better, see how that comes through.
Okay, and then I’m gonna go and grab the orange, still with my gouache, I’m gonna bring that down maybe again to five, or back down to five, and just have some… Oops, and I’m gonna have the opacity actually at about 35%, and just make some little shadows in here just along those lines that we made.
And then I’m actually gonna use my blender brush. I don’t use it very often, but I am gonna go in, and… Actually let’s just go to painting and get the gouache. So it’s the same one and we’re gonna have that at about 5% and 100% opacity and… Actually, no, I’m gonna go down to 30%, 35 somewhere there, and just make it this little blend. So again blend this out just a little bit, so it looks a little bit more blended. Whatever look you wanna go for really. That’s just another way of painting. So that kinda works better. So I’m actually gonna do something a little different ’cause I really want this darker in the center, but I still wanna keep the tips a little bit lighter, so I’m actually gonna go and color my line layer. So, I’m gonna click on the line-layer, hit the plus sign clipping mask. And let’s go and grab this brown. Still with the gouache, we still have it, maybe pop it up to 10% or so, you can keep it at 35. Let’s just darken these. You see how that makes that pop a little bit just in the center, ’cause I just wanted to create more depth there. Okay, I like that way better. Let’s just give this a little color too. Just this part. Okay. That’s good.
And then I’m just gonna go to the white and I’m going to grab… Maybe we can stay on this brown, that’s okay. Let’s just bring this way down to about 3. Actually, no, I don’t like that brown. Scratch that, grab the orange. Let’s just give it a little shadow, again probably more in the center just to push it back. Okay, so that’s probably good. Let’s move on to our purple one. I’m going to just color in the white layer and let’s just stay on the orange and just pop some color in there, just a rub on the underside is fine, and you can just dot it in too. So you still have that highlight which is nice. Okay, then let’s go to the purple layer, click on that, click plus sign, tap on it and then clipping mask. Grab that dark purple, still with our gouache, let’s just paint in some lines.
Just trying to make it look less flat, of which of course you can keep it that way, why not, that is a look, but I’m just trying to make it look so that you can tell the difference between the petals, so bringing those out a little bit. Having a shadow behind will help. Okay, so we can get our blender brush, keeping it the same, you can just go in and soften some of those edges, making one side hard, one side soft, if you want. You can’t really wreck it at this point ’cause you can still go in and put some more paint on it and undo that and fix that, that’s the great thing about Procreate, we can always fix pretty much anything.
Alright, let’s go ahead and bring that opacity up to 100%, just so that I can get some more of the little darkness in here, and then I’m just gonna smooth it out a little bit, I’m actually gonna pop a little color in there, so let’s grab this pink. Just add a little bit in here, just in the very center. Yeah, that’s good. Alright, let’s see. Now, let’s do these guys here ’cause they need some orange in the center, so let’s go to our Plumeria layer and hit the plus sign and grab a clipping mask, get the yellow to start, I’m just gonna put in some yellow, we’re still on our gouache, we’re still at about 5%, and now we’re at 100% opacity. So just bring these in the center of the leaves here or the petals, rather. And then we’re gonna blend them out a bit, just a touch. Okay, and then grab that orange and put that closer to the center. Okay, and then grab your blender and just really make sure that, that just sticks in the center there. There we go. Now, what I would do is just grab my eraser and bring it way down to about 2%, and just make sure that these edges don’t have anything on them, ’cause they wouldn’t make sense, so to keep them nice and white. Okay, that defines them there. So the same thing to these guys. Grab that orange, grab the blender, just blend those centers, and then you can just do the edges a little bit, if need be.
Okay, good stuff. And let’s do the leaves, just get some color on there, so grab your leaf fill and that plus sign and a clipping mask, grab the dark green. I’m just gonna bring up my brush quite large and just give it a regular tap. I’m gonna go in the center of this guy here, get the shadow, maybe on the tips here, you know what I mean? Just sort of give it a little splashy paintiness. Don’t need much, I think that’s probably good. We can go and make up a lighter green too, if you wanna just to give it a little more, maybe bring down the opacity. And I’ll just play with it a little bit. Okay, actually with this lighter green, I’ll add it for you. I’m gonna grab my inking brush again, the dry ink and just go in this little vein here. I think I’ll just add a little something, maybe we’ll just have that in there, maybe just like a couple highlights on a few, in the center, when the light’s hitting it. Maybe a little in here.
Okay, I think that’s good. I’m gonna do the same thing to the flowers as well, so let’s go back to our clipping mask layer, grab that light purple, I’m gonna make an even lighter purple and maybe just… I don’t know where the light sort of hits, or we can add a few… Oops, little highlights. I don’t know, wherever you think they might happen to be. Something like that. Alright, and then the yellow, grab that clipping mask layer, it’s gonna be nearly white at that point. Oops, what’s happening? Oh, I’m not sure. Oh, I know why, because I have it on multiply. So I’m going to add a… Well, actually, I’ll just go on this layer here, the stamen layer, just add some highlights there. You could blend these a bit too, if you wanted not so liney, that’s totally something I might do. Alright, so I think… Actually I’m gonna just do what I did to that other one, I’m gonna go to the line layer of the purple, add a new layer, clipping mask, and grab the dark… I’m actually just gonna go to my painting with the gouache 100% and just darken these lines in here a little bit. There. Just needed a little pop. I think that’s better.
