How to draw a Man Walking step by step in Procreate Tutorial – Using Brushes/Guides

Hi guys, I’m Kris. Welcome to this week’s tutorial.

Let’s draw together!

In this week’s tutorial, we’ll be drawing a man walking in Procreate, and I’m sure you can create this too, if you follow along with this video all the way to the end. It’s going to be a little bit different this week. I am showing you how to use my new male body brush box, so they’re stamp brushes for Procreate. They’re brushes for Photoshop and Affinity as well, and they also come in Photoshop layers and illustrator layers, and PNG and PDF. So that’s a lot of stuff there, but you can use them however you want. You can even print them out and use them that way. They are guides to help you learn to draw better, and easier, quicker, faster, and just to get to the illustration part so you don’t have to think about body proportion, face proportion, all that kind of stuff. It’s just a really simple, easy tool to help you in your journey of learning how to draw better, and if you’re interested in these brushes, you can find them in the description. There’s a link below for you. And don’t forget once you finish this entire video to share it on Instagram and tag me in the image as well as the description so I can find your artwork and feature you here on the next draw together video.

For this video, feel free to use whatever colors you like. There’s no color palette today, but you don’t really need it. We can just jump right in by creating our canvas at 4000 x 4000 pixels, 300 DPI. We don’t really need a square, but I just like to have a lot of white space, so it’s good for today. Let’s jump in and I’m just gonna go and find our male body brushes. So they come in a husky build, an athletic build, and a slim build, and then there are the heads as well. So I’m just gonna go and grab an athletic body, and you can see there’s 14 different body positions, and today, I’m just gonna use the walking forward one, and I’m gonna have it at about 80%. So I’ll just simply tap and there he is, and then we can use our arrow to move him. So let’s go grab him a face.  And I’m gonna just create another layer, so I’m gonna hit the plus sign, go back to my brushes and then go to the male heads. And here we have 14 forward-facing, three-quarter looking to his side a bit, profile, and then three-quarters facing down, and they all have different hairstyles to choose from.

So today I’m gonna just grab this mid-cut, this front-facing. I’m gonna have it at the same size at about, let’s say, 80 and see what that’s like. Just tap, and there he is. And then I can move him and I’m just gonna actually make this just a hair larger for today, and just put it around there. Now you can decide how long you’d like his neck to be, but I’m gonna place him there. Okay, so now we can go and just merge these two layers, and we can resize him too, to make him a little bit bigger. Okay, and there we go. So much work is already done for us. He’s all ready to go. All we need to do is put some clothes on the poor man.  But you can see it really makes it a lot simpler, especially things like this where it’s already figured out the foreshortening of the leg, which can sometimes be a little bit tricky and hands, so that’s always nice to have those done. So let’s jump in and give him some clothes. So I’m just gonna bump back the opacity by clicking on the end, turning it down to… I’ll do it at about 30, so you can see him well enough. Then I’m gonna create another layer and we’ll start drawing our clothes on that new layer.

Okay, so I’m just gonna keep it just black is fine, and now we’ll go into our free brushes, so just our regular brushes in Procreate. I’m going to go to inking and grab that dry ink brush that I love so much, and I’m gonna have it at about 6%. Okay, so I think I’m just gonna do a collared, a collared button shirt. Most of the time, that’s what my husband wears, so I think he will be my inspiration today.  So I’m just gonna start by just bringing the collar here. And I would just lay it like that. It’s a little bit messy, maybe. And that’s gonna tuck in like that. Seeing where this bends here. Maybe it would kinda bend like that. And then we’re gonna have this come over and have it come in here. Alright, so it’s not like a perfectly starched shirt so you can have it a little bit wiggly. And that line would be coming here, the stitching line. Okay, so I’m gonna have this ever so slightly just off center and a little bit wiggly and go like that, and this is this little stitching line here. There would be a button here and maybe here where his belly button is.  You know what? This is probably curved a little touch too much, so I’m just gonna straighten that out just a hair. Okay. And that’ll come up there. Alright.

I’m gonna just give him just some little lines here just to make it not too straight just to look like it has a little bit of movement to it. Okay, so that should be fine. I’m gonna come in with the shoulders and I’m gonna make a specific little mark there, kinda like to break that where the seam would be there, and so it shows where the shoulder and the arm meet on the shirt, and I think I kinda make this a more casual look, so I’m gonna have a little gathered here and more of a turned up sleeve. Let’s bring this sort of in like that. Yeah, okay, so same again on the other side, just gonna make that seam where the arms go, make a few wiggles there, it’s kind of where it’ll come in, then we’re gonna have the rolled up sleeve.

Okay. Casual shirt, next, let’s give him some pants. We’ll just give him, obviously, jeans would go well with this type of look. So I’m just gonna start with the fly area, bring that down and go on up, give it a little stitch kind of in there. Then I’m gonna drop the crotch a little bit, that sounds lovely, give him a little room, you know? Alright, and then the folds there, and of course the stitching would carry on under here, and then there would be the lines there. Actually, I’m just gonna make this look more like it’s kind of coming like that, and then you have the leg coming here.

Okay, just a few creases and folds, just to make it look a little bit more natural. I’m gonna make it look like… So we obviously can see that knee, so there would be some folds in there, and then that pant would come around here. Again, I’m just giving him some room. Okay. Usually a little bit baggier around the knee, these are a slightly tighter style of jean, I guess. We can have a little hem line there. Okay, that should be all right.

So you can see if we remove the template behind, it looks like a man shape. Let’s give him a few more details on these jeans here, you’ll see the little bit of the pocket, I think that would come down here. We can just indicate that by some stitching like so. Okay, and then, let’s draw in the rest of the body. So we can just bring in these arms here, and of course, you can give this more of a painted stem, more realistic, more cartoon-ish, you can… Obviously, it doesn’t have to be a black outline, like I’m doing, this is just more of an illustrative style. You make it whatever style you want, at least you’ve got the basics to start with, and that just makes it so much easier and so much less time-consuming. Especially figuring out hands and stuff like that, that can always be really fun. Okay, so just something about the heads, the heads are just a very classic proportions, so of course, not everybody has these proportions, everybody’s a little bit different, but this just gives you a really basic start so you can adjust.

Everybody is not gonna have this jaw line, but you can know if you’re trying to do something that’s a little bit of a sharper point, a little bit of a rounder face, a little bit narrower, any of those things. And the same with where the eyes and nose and mouth are placed, that will vary from person to person as well, but at least you have a starting point of something that is just sort of that basic, classic dimensions and you can start from there. So let’s just… I’m gonna keep it basically what’s here today, just somewhat classic shape. If I can trace anything, that would be really  a miracle. Here we go. Okay, I think we’ll do his head in a minute, why don’t we get on to his shoes here.

So the shoes, with these feet it actually makes it fairly simple. It might look kind of funny right now, but you’ll see in a minute, you just put in the little shoe tab. We’ll give him some runners, I think. Bring it around in there, you just follow the lines basically. I’m just gonna make the end a little bit more round, ’cause this shoe would be a little bit rounder, maybe not quite that round, and then it’s gonna have a little bit of a thicker sole to it. Okay, something like that. And put these laces in. And then we’ll just tie a little bow, maybe have a little tag there and there we are, some runners. Okay, good, and then this one, we’ll just follow here after the little tab bit, that little tongue, whatever you call that.

Alright. Well there, good, he’s got some shoes. Good stuff. And now, why don’t we go and just kinda get the face going. Alright, so I think we’ll give him a little smile today, so actually, I’m gonna start with his eyes. I’m just gonna bring my pen down just a hair, just to like 4% and I’m just gonna basically follow this, for the most part. I’ll just make it a little bit more square like that. And I’m not gonna go too big with male eyes just because, well, they’re usually not wearing make-up, so it’s a little less expressive. And when you have them too large it does start to look a little bit more on the feminine side, I think, anyways. But yeah, just keeping them a little bit smaller. I can keep this crease here and again, I’m not gonna do lashes, but I am just gonna do the lash line a little bit thicker just with the line. That way you can get the depth but not have all the lovely lashes like I usually do. Although I will say oftentimes, men have way more fabulous lashes than a lot of women. It’s not fair. Yeah, anyway, I know you ladies know that.

Well, I have eyelash-envy of my husband, anyway.  Alright, and of course, the brows are most likely going to be a little bit thicker, heavier than most women, maybe a little slightly more unruly depending on the guy. But this guy, we’ll give him a decent brow here. It’s probably good. I think I’m not really quite thrilled with the shape here. Again, I can go into my magic wand, grab my liquify, just make that quite… It’s on the push, and maybe to 22%. I’m just gonna… Maybe down even more at 15. I’m just unhappy with the edges there. Those are a little bit too catty or something. Okay, that’s better. Now I just fix things with my little liquify brush, love it. Okay, I think I’m gonna give him a bit… A few lines here, just because I’m gonna have him smiling, so we might have some nice creases like so. Okay, we’ll see. Now because you’ve drawn this, I’m just actually going to totally do another little cheat. And I’m gonna get this squiggly little line. I’ve got to figure out what that’s called.  And just… So back to my eye, I’m in freehand and add, and I’m just gonna click copy and paste, and so that now I have that eye on an… Or a copy of that eye on another layer. And I’m just gonna hit my arrow and on uniform, say flip horizontally.

I’m going to have my snapping on and have my magnetics on so that I can simply just slide it over and we can… I’m just trying to find out where it’s supposed to go. We can cheat. So,  I am gonna change it a little bit just because sometimes it does look a little bit funny if they’re exactly… But that’ll happen when I start coloring and stuff, so that I think just saves us a little time. Okay, right, so that’s a good start for that. I might make some adjustments in a minute, but we’ll see where we go. Okay, let’s give him a little nose here. I’m just gonna do just a really basic kind of nose here, so I’m just gonna start with a little line, go up for the nostrils, give it a little darker line there, and then a swoop around. Hopefully the same on the other side. Swoop around there, just classic. I don’t know if it’s classic, but just like a simple nose. And I’m gonna bring in here a little bit. I’m gonna just… And around here just to give him a little bit of definition.

Okay. And then his mouth. Let’s do a nice smile. So I’m going to… Because that smile’s gonna actually bring his lip line up, of course. I’m gonna start here and I’m just gonna do… Put the beans there. I don’t know why I call them beans. I’m not sure that’s right, but anyway  And it’s just gonna be a subtle swoop. And that’s the top lip, and then I’m just gonna… Because when you smile, usually your top lip stretches out a little bit, so we’re gonna have it not too big here. Okay, so that’s our top lip. And then the bottom lip is going to be about here, and that’s just gonna come down like that. Okay, and give him a little… His bottom lip will be a little bit bigger…

Okay, I’m gonna turn off my layer below my guide layer just so we can see a little bit more. Making marks all over the place. So to do the teeth, what I do is just darken in a little ways in here. See, like that, and then… So twitchy, just in here, I don’t know, what is that, three quarters of the way in? Just give a little triangle, just to indicate those, are they incisors? I should know this. You know, your little shark teeth, the pointy ones. Just to signify those. So that’s a really simple way, just to make a really easy smile without, I don’t like drawing all the teeth when I’m doing something more illustrative. I think that’s too much information. So just doing these little teeny dots and just filling in the sides just give you enough to go on I think to read that as a smile and as teeth. Just a little line, extra line underneath the lip, just to have that shadow there. Okay, so we have a smile. Looks good.

Okay, and I’m just gonna do, let’s do a little bit of hair here. Actually, I’m gonna do this, oops. Actually, I’m gonna just merge this down just ’cause that was our copied layer and just get some hair going here. So with the hairstyles they’re just obviously a start, a suggestion of just where things would go and you can just fill in the rest. So I really just concentrate more on the roots at this point, just getting those lines and just the general flow in. Oops.

Actually, maybe this will go behind his ear like that.

Not gonna do every hair, just a few lines just to indicate where it’s going. Okay let’s see without just turning that off. Okay, I should be good for now. Okay, so I think it’s time to fill some color in. So I’m gonna go on, click on layer one and hit the plus sign, and first I’m gonna start by filling in his skin color. So I’m just gonna go to my studio pen just right above my dry ink here, and start filling it in. So let’s maybe fast forward through this, ’cause I know you know how to do this.

And then just take your color and drag it in, and there we go, filled it up.

Okay, next I’m gonna create another layer, so hitting the plus sign, and I’m going to do his… Put his jeans here. I’m just gonna pick on a blue jean color.

And then I’m going to create another layer and put his shirt on top. So I’m gonna change the color in a little bit, but I’ll just make it gray for now.

Okay, I’m just gonna add another layer and fill these in with gray too.

Okay, and I’m actually gonna turn these to white because I think I want them white and but, anyways, so there we go. And let’s see, maybe we should put a little bit behind his face here. So I’m just gonna go to my skin layer just to keep things organized, and hit the plus sign, and I’m gonna go and make this a very, a slightly gray, slightly creamy white color, it’s not gonna be pure white, and I’m gonna go to the painting and grab my gouache, and have it quite small, maybe, I don’t know, two percent, and just fill in the eye, I’m just gonna make it one percent, actually, and 100% opacity, and just fill this in. You just don’t want it to be 100% white, it makes it look a little bit crazy. This will look more realistic, and we can use that color on the teeth as well.

Okay. And while I’m here, I’m just gonna make it a little bit pink, just for the corners here, the edges. Okay. And I’m just gonna make those eyes, just gonna make them a brown color, just a gray-brown color, just fill that in. Okay. And then I’m, at the very top, at the very top of your layers, I’m gonna add another layer, make it completely white, and have your brush at one percent and just do a little white dot so you have that, so there are his eyes. And I’m just gonna do a little bit of base color, I’m gonna go back to the eye, at the eye layer, and hit the plus sign, and, yeah, just with… We’ll have him have brown hair. Again, with the gouache maybe at around three percent, just kinda block in this color a little bit. Don’t go too far to the edges, just because we’ll do that with more hair later, but… Just kinda get an idea.

And I’m holding down my brush the whole time here, and I’ve picked it up again to make it thicker or more opaque. All right, and while we’re here, we can make our brush smaller to one percent and just fill in those eyebrows too. All right. Well, that looks good, we just got our basic color blocking in and we can start adding some more depth and interest and definitely getting that hair under control. So let’s go back into our layers and go on, click on the jeans layer, the fill layer, add another layer on top and click on clipping mask, and we’re gonna just make some changes here. So I’m gonna select this blue color just so I have the same, then I’m going to take… In this view, I’m gonna take this little circle and go down a little bit into the right, so making an L shape, and then I’m going to go back into my painting and grab the spectra brush, and I’m gonna have it at, oh, I don’t know, 40%, just larger, and softly dust over it, not hard, as you can see, just softly, it gives it a little bit of texture, I hope you can see that, just to make it a little bit interesting. And then I’m gonna bring my brush quite small, maybe about two or three, and just start doing some shadowing. The crotch is going to be a little darker on the inside of the legs.

Just ’cause you know how jeans are, where there are seams and stuff, it’s where the dye really collects the most, so you’re gonna wanna make that darker. You’re gonna have to have your brush quite small and just get in there and… Yeah, where the creases would be and the seams would be. Make sure that’s sort of your darkest area and you can build that up too. So actually I’m gonna go even darker. So I’m gonna do the L again down into the right with my little color picker and just start to get these shadows in here. Oops, I made a funny line.

Bring that brush up a little bit. I’m just being really light with it. I just dust it around. The shirt would probably cast a little bit of a shadow. And, of course, this part of the leg would be more in shadow too. So you can really push that back, make it look further away.

It depends where the pockets are too, like where the inside of the pockets are really. Get some more dye in there, so you just wanna have that…

Looks a little bit line-y. Okay. That’s probably good for now. Okay. Let’s get this shirt out. Obviously, I don’t like this particular color. It looks… Makes him look a little blah at the moment. So let’s see. What color should we do? So let’s actually just make it a white. So I’m not gonna make it pure white, I’m just gonna make it slightly off white, slightly blue maybe. Let’s see what that looks like. Okay. That’s probably good for a start. And let’s see. We can give him… Maybe we’ll make it, like I said, we’ll make it plaid, so we’ll get some stripes in there. But first I’m going to just do some shadows. So I’m gonna just do the same thing. Add the plus sign, click on it, clipping mask, and I’m just gonna take this and down into the right, just like that L shape. I’m gonna use my gouache this time, still in painting, just maybe about, I don’t know, 12%. Let’s just give him some bit of shape here. So I’m having it so my light is basically coming straight, like this way, so this side is more gonna be shadowy, in general. I just keep adjusting my brush size just to suit my needs here.

Well, let’s make it a touch darker. Just keeping that darker color just closer to the edges.

Okay. Great. Okay. That’s probably good to start. And then I’m, actually, while we’re on this color, I’m just gonna do the shoes as well, ’cause they will also be white. So I’m gonna click on the shoe layer, click the plus sign, clipping mask, and just do a few shadows on it, while we’re here. So I’m gonna do it about 4 or 5%, just giving it a little definition.

Okay. It’s probably good for now. And why don’t we do his skin while we’re at it too. So I’m gonna go and select his skin layer, hit the plus sign, hit clipping mask, and I’m gonna grab this skin color and go down into the right and start making some shadows. So under the jaw. And I’m still on my gouache. Now we can use our guides to help us with the shadows a little bit. So I’m gonna turn them back on. Of course, we won’t see them, but I’m just gonna drag it above. It can go all the way above too, if you want, so we can see that. So you see where these lines are? Those are actually the sides of your face, so they’re actually gonna have shadow on them. So you can just kind of follow this. This is where your cheekbone would be, and that’s where you would have that plane change there. So hopefully that makes sense. I can turn it back on, so I can see. See? So now he’s got some definition there.

Okay, so we can make it a little bit smaller. Maybe around two. And the other thing, the really easy thing to do is just come in and make this eye socket dark ’cause that’s gonna be shot out in there. And that’ll really help bring some depth to this. And then I’m just gonna follow down the nose, just really lightly. I see I’ve got some dots and erasing that I need to do.  And then kind of a triangle below the nose, you can see that hopefully. And just around kind of where he’s got… That there. I’m gonna make this a 1% just so I can get into the smaller areas. And I’m gonna go down and make it darker a little bit more. So, making that L and still at 1%, just a little bit more definition in some of these creases here. 2%. So under the lip would be emphasized. Oh, I know what we’ve forgotten. I’ve forgotten his smile lines. That would be nice. Okay, I think this… Actually I’m just gonna blend this out, just got a little bit out of control there. Okay, right. So and I have that darker still, and I’m just gonna make it a little bit more in his ear there. Maybe a little bit more closer to the jaw here.

Okay, that’s good for now. I’m gonna go back to that lighter brown that I had. So as you can see it’s just that brown I originally had for the shadows, the Gouache, gonna bring it up to maybe about 4% and just do a little bit on his arms. His fingers here. And on those legs here, gonna just give him a little shadow too. Okay, so let’s go and just continue on with his face a little bit. I’m actually gonna probably make his hair quite a bit darker just because of his… His skin color would probably work nicely with some darker hair. So first, I’m gonna actually do his lips. So we can just go stay on this layer. And I’m gonna pick sort of a peachy, pinky color. Let’s just see. It’s too light. Yeah, maybe that. Let’s try that. Again for guys lips, I don’t go too crazy pink or anything like that, just ’cause probably not wearing lipstick. And then I’m just gonna make it a little darker here just to emphasize the corners. But yeah, I just don’t wanna… Too much… Too much color on here. That’s just my personal preference, and then the upper lip is just gonna be a little bit darker. And then I’m just gonna take that in this color palette just get something kinda light and just give it a little… Just a little highlight. Just gonna make this a little bit smaller. Okay. Good. So that’s probably good for the lips. We can go in and I’m just gonna add another layer, you don’t have to necessarily, but I’m just going to.

On top of that, shadow layer, I’m gonna do a highlight layer. So I’m gonna go back to the… Actually, I’m just gonna grab this skin color, and I have something a little bit lighter. So the opposite L, the reverse L.  And let’s just do a few highlights. I’m probably gonna be at about 2% and just give him a little… Little highlights. Maybe his forehead a little bit. His cheeks and his chin of course. And the edge of his hand, arm a little bit on the side. Okay. And then on another layer, I’m just gonna give him a little… A little bit more of a warm color and just… Let’s see. Just warm up his cheeks a touch here, and his forehead. Let’s give them a little bit of color. I hope that makes a difference. Alright, let’s go back to his hair color layer, and I’m gonna bring it down. I’m gonna just continue with my browns and just bring it quite dark, let’s see, maybe we’ll just stick with the gouache for a second here and just block this out. So I’m gonna make it darker, just keep layering more where… Especially close to his scalp so, or where the roots are.

I’m gonna make his eyebrows a touch darker too, his eyes a bit… Then I’m gonna go and grab the… Let’s see the old brush and bring it down to maybe 4%. Works a little bit for…

I can bring in our guide again, I’m trying to remember where their hair went. Okay, I’m gonna turn that guide back off. Alright. And let’s see, maybe the dry brush. The dry brush, works nicely too actually.

Alright, so I’m gonna go back and grab my into inking and grab that dry brush, still the same color, and let’s just get some more hairs in here.

Okay, and I’m gonna go and back to black. I’m gonna put a few more… I gotta keep with the direction here. A few more of these in just to keep working, and sometimes I find that if you have just a few on the outside that gives it a better look, just sort of finishing ones.

I’m just gonna make some more breaks here… I’m just gonna erase a few little bits in here, I think it’s gotten a little bit too messy on me.

There, I think that’s better.

Okay, and back to the gouache and just gonna have a quite dark but not black, and at 1%, black and a few more dark spots here.

And I’m just gonna grab like a lighter brown, just for some highlights, still with my gouache. Just spring a few in.

So let’s maybe start on the pattern on the shirt. Okay, so I’m just gonna go to his shirt layer, and we can be below the shadow layer and just add another one, click on it. Oh, it becomes a clipping mask, if you put one below the original clipping mask, so that’s no problem. So just gonna go and grab… Let’s just start with this blue and then I’m gonna bring it lighter over here maybe, and I’m gonna choose my inking brush inking pen, and let’s just make a plaid pattern. Alright.

So I’m gonna have it at… Let’s see, well, of course, you’re not gonna see it there. We’re at about 7%. Okay, and let’s start this pattern, so I will start here and just following the lines of the shirt.

Okay, and then those lines are gonna go this way on this sleeve. Okay, and then we will oops… Start here.

Alright, so now let’s get these lines going the other way to make it a plaid so I was gonna simply go this way.

All right, so, now I’m gonna just click on the layer below, and I’m gonna add some color underneath this. So, I think I’m gonna go with just like a gray color. And, let’s see. I’m gonna grab my gouache, and let’s see, I’m gonna make it quite a bit bigger, maybe to about eight. Sure, so I’m just gonna fill this section in. And, this section. I’ll make it a little bit smaller, four, just to tuck into here. And, so I’m kind of alternating so what am I doing? [laughter] All right, this section.

Whoops, back up to eight. Back down to two, and yeah. I’m gonna get this edge here. We’ll go on in the collar as well. All right, and I’m gonna make a layer below that. And, I’m gonna make it, maybe a mid-tone gray/blue color. And, I’m gonna come in and fill this in, every other one. Okay, we’re getting a plaid look, that’s good. Whoops. Okay, and then lastly, back to that blue-stripe layer, I’m just gonna go white. And, grab my inking, that dry ink, and just to do… I’m gonna be at 4% and just put a thread through all these squares here.

Okay, and then I’m gonna go this way as well.

Okay, I think we’ve achieved a decent looking plaid there. [laughter] All right, what else can we do? I kinda wanna make this these just a little bit darker in here, in those shadows. So, I’m gonna back to that shadows layer, just pick up a dark, navy color I guess. Go back to painting, go back to gouache, bring it down to about two, and just make these creases here a little bit more… I just wanna have that arm pushed back a bit. A bit more than it is right now.

PS. Check out my all my illustrations here!

How To Draw A Valentines Day Bunny

By illustration, invitations, procreate

How to Create a Valentine’s Day Bunny Card – Tutorial

Hey guys and welcome back!

Today I’m gonna show you a quick little demo of how to draw a cute little Valentine’s Bunny. It could be for any occasion of course, but I’m gonna be showing you using my latest pack, cats and dogs, a lovable illustration collection. This is just new to the shop today. We’re gonna actually be creating this little Valentine’s Day card here, and I’ll show you how to get flowers arranged and how to make that work and how to use that or how to create that so you’re using clip art properly. You can, of course, make all sorts of cute things, not just exclusive to Valentine’s Day, but I think love theme should be all year round, it kind of works with all that. You can see there’s lots of other cute goodies in here.

Let’s start from the beginning. Let’s say you’ve gone and gotten this pack and you’ve downloaded it, and your zip file will probably appear in your downloads folder, it would be in mine here and I’ve unzipped it already, of course. Okay, once you open it up, you have lots of things in here, like the bird houses, and some birdies, and some cars, and all sorts of good stuff. There is a full range of cats and dogs so we won’t leave anybody out. And if you’re like me, you like both, that’s all good, they’re both here for you to mix and match, combine, or just use one or the other. I’m gonna open up the cats today and go in and looked at the clothed, oh I should probably show you. There’s clothed and no clothes. So we have all of them in their little furry bodies there. That’s all good.

So you can put on accessories on them or just leave them as they are, or you can go in and choose the clothed options, there’s boy outfits, that type thing, or a girl outfit and dresses and whatnot. Today, I’m gonna use this cute little girl cat here, and I’ll show you how to do that. I’m gonna open up Photoshop, and of course, you can use whatever graphics editor that you’re comfortable with, this will even work in Procreate, or Affinity, or CorelDRAW, that sort of thing. Any of these things and this is really, really simple ’cause they’re all PNG files, so anything that can open and edit a PNG file should work for you. I’m just gonna open up Photoshop and I actually have a mockup here, it is from fieldofficesupply.com, I can throw a link down below for you guys if you’re interested. They have a really simple little pack of mockups that just have some cards in it, so that’s what I’m using today.

So you can see that we have the envelope and the card. So I’m just gonna go and see where it says place art here, there’s a smart object here, I’m gonna open that up and this will be our canvas for today. So I can go ahead and delete that pattern, ’cause we won’t be needing it. There’s a texture over top, that’s probably fine, I might add my own, that’s okay too. So I’m gonna go and grab that cute little cat and bring her in, just drag and drop, and I’m just gonna size her down just a touch, and place her about here I’d say. I’m just gonna get rid of these guys for a second, by doing Command H to get rid of all my extras. And then I’m gonna go and get some flowers. So I’m gonna navigate back to where it says florals, and grab, go in the flower section, and you can see there’s a bunch of flowers ready for you in all different colors and whatnot.

So I’m going to grab this guy and I’m just gonna hold down commands, on a Mac, what is it on a PC, shift probably, or control, and grab this flower, and I’m gonna get the dandelion, where is it? It’s there, and this guy here. I think that might be enough to start with. I’m just gonna drag and drop them and just hit enter to let them come in, and there we go. Now I’m gonna click the top one and then the bottom one, and hold down shift to shift select all of them, and then Control or Command T to transform. And I’m just gonna make them all together a little bit smaller, I’ll just do it at the same time, just making it easier. My computer’s being a little glitchy, sorry about that. Okay, so I’m gonna actually take the cat and put her on the top there so I can see, and then I’m just gonna grab… Oopsie, that’s the problem with these textures things, you got to lock them down, otherwise you just end up selecting them. Okay, so I’m gonna grab this flower and I’m gonna say edit, transform, flip horizontal, and then I’m just gonna Control or Command T, and just slide into position.

Oh my goodness, having laggy issues right now. Okay, so I’m gonna put it about there, and I grab this flower, I’m gonna bring it up above, actually that will be my most forefront flower. So I’m gonna just bring it there, Control T, or Command T, and just pop it over there. Oops, about that. Okay, and then I’m just gonna just arrange things just so they look how I want them to. And I’m gonna bring this guy to the back, be at the forefront there, I’m behind and over here, hold on, and that’s how I did it before. Alright, something like that, and you just sort of playing. I’m gonna flip this one, so I’m gonna go edit, transform, flip horizontal again, that way I can get that second one to appear more like that. Okay, so I think I’m gonna have to select everybody and just make them a touch smaller as to fit in our canvas here, in our card. Okay, it’s all about just rearranging playing around, it’s literally like floral arrangement.

So that’s good. I’m just gonna make this guy a little bit bigger, so Command or Control T. This guy a little bit bigger. Okay, I think that’s probably good. So here’s the thing, you notice that this may be looking a touch odd, I mean, it’s up to you, it sort of works, with that bow in front, but let’s say you wanted to get rid of that and have these stones come in front of that bow. This is how you would do it. Instead of erasing, which of course is an option, but you do run the risk of making a mistake and not being able to change anything afterwards, so we’re gonna try to work non destructively.

So I’m gonna select that cat a layer, and I’m gonna go down here, if you could see my cursor here, by the FX, there’s a square or rectangle with a circle in it, so that’s gonna be a layer mask, so if you just click on that, you’ll see here that the mask up here. So you can click on the cat or you can click on the mask, so you wanna click on the mask, and then you’re gonna go to your brushes, so just your brush tool, and I’m gonna have it set to a hard brush, a hard round brush. Just standard in Photoshop. And with my cursor, so I’m just gonna make this a little smaller, my bracket cursor is what will make that happen. And then you can see, if you have… Sorry, I should probably tell you this first. Here, over here, if you have black and white, so just have your standard black and white on, so if black is in the foreground, then that will remove the cat section, so if you switched to white, it’ll add back in.

Okay, so again, click on the black, and we can take it away, and also if you wanted to, you can always just remove that mask as well, and then it goes away, so if you wanted to delete it in the future for some reason. So what I’m gonna do is I’m just gonna keep with my black and just actually kind of see where I want this to go, I don’t know if I want it to go all the way down there. I’m just gonna make it so that I can see a lot of it, or you could always change your opacity so you can see what’s behind, but this way I can just kinda see what I need to do and then I can go back with my white and fill it in. So I’m gonna make my brush a little bit smaller and then go back and fill in where her hand would be, ’cause we wanna keep the hand, but remove the parts of the dress behind.

Okay, so then I can go in here and just kinda guess where this is. Make it get smaller, ’cause there’s a button there. Okay, and let that leaf show and so I’m gonna change back to black, so I can come in there and just put that back. Switch to white and remove this part. Okay, so maybe this part, we’ll take that out as well, ’cause that doesn’t really make any sense, that area there, and then switching back to white to put it back and just getting that in there.

Okay, so there we go. That’s a way to make it show that it’s in front of that bow, if you prefer that. So that’s just a little trick there. And now I’m gonna add some text, so I’m just gonna go to my text tool and just have my text on black, just the reason why is with this font I’m gonna use, it actually doesn’t allow you to change the color, I have to do a color overlay on it, but that’s okay.

So I’m gonna use Little Bee. Maybe I’ll add in a link for you below where you get… This is just a cute font, it’s not a free front, it is a purchased font, but it’s rather adorable, I quite like it. So I’m gonna just write Happy Valentine’s Day. Okay, and I’m gonna have it aligned like that, just because it works with my composition here, and I’m just gonna do a Command T to transform and bring it a little bit larger, and that works. I’m having it at… The distance between the letters, I’m gonna have maybe at… Let’s see 100. I think that looks nice and just bring it in there, I kinda wanna keep and just not touching anything and maybe having it line up with the foot there, so I could always… I’ve done a Command R, it brings up and down your ruler, so you can just drag a ruler here and just make sure that you’re all in there, that’s good. That’s fine.

Okay, again, I think I’m gonna just go and select everybody, not this rectangle. Hold on, select everybody, just drag and select, Control or Command T, and just make it a wee bit smaller and that is looking good. Okay, we can go and see now. With a mockup, if you just save the file and then go back, the artwork will appear, and there we go. So that looks really adorable. Okay, so what we’ve done is we’ve done a good job of combining elements together, making it our own. I think it’s a good idea to add a color or some sort of background, so you could add a texture or a wash or something like that. You know what? We could even go add some more… Let’s see what this will look like. I’m gonna go and find the individual elements and grab some hearts here, ’cause it is Valentine’s Day. Let’s see if we could just add a couple of these guys in here, might be a little bit too much. Maybe if it’s just like that. Something like that.

Okay, and of course, we can go to our bottom layer and add maybe some color and a little background to it, so I’m just gonna select this here or make this rectangle this size. I wanna say the fill is going to be a yellow color, and I’m gonna put a line on it, a white or a stroke rather, and just bump that up quite a bit, like so. And that should be good. Okay, and then just save your work and we can go and see that, rather cute. That’s a really quick and easy way to make an adorable little card using clip art from this latest Cats and Dogs pack. If you wanna check out the full pack, I’ll leave a link in the description down below for you, as well as, there’s a link to some free goodies I’d love to share, and as well as the information of where to get this mockup.

How to Paint Simple Watercolor Florals Step by Step in Procreate Tutorial

Hi guys, I’m Kris!

Welcome to this week’s tutorial. Let’s draw together. In this week’s tutorial, we’ll be drawing a watercolor flower composition in Procreate, and I’m sure you can create this too if you follow along all the way to the end of the video. If you feel rushed, don’t worry, just hit pause or rewind to catch up and save this video to your library so you can have some practice in the future if you need it. So today, I’ll be using all free brushes, one is found in procreate, but the other one I’ve made for you, and you can find it in the description below.

And don’t forget, once you’ve finished this entire video to share it on Instagram and tag me in the image as well as the description so I can find your artwork and feature you here in the next draw together video.

So for this video, I’ve made you a free color palette as usual, just in case you’d like to use the exact same colors I’ll be using today. And you can just tap on the link in the video description below, and you’ll find it there along with some other free goodies and links to the shop and all that kind of good stuff as well as that brush I mentioned.

Let’s Get Started

First make a new canvas. It’s just screen size and 300 DPI and sRGB. So let’s start with getting these roses going. So if you just wanna pick the lightest pink here, and I’m gonna go and grab this brush. Now, the free brush I’ve just put into my water folder, you can put it wherever you want, I’m just gonna be using this free brush and this water bleed as well, so I just thought I’d put it there for convenience sake. So what we’re gonna do with this rose is I’m gonna just make my brush about size 15% and have it at a 100% opacity.

So what we’re gonna start with, it’s some… It’s just a little… Well, they’re just lines really, but they are overlapping and curved in a certain way, so let’s go. What you’re gonna do is just go a little C, and then a little interlocking C. So that’s like the start of the little… The close together buds. Now here, you’ll see there’s like a little opening here and an opening there, and every time we see that, we’re gonna cover it with another petal.

So I’m gonna just go with another little petal there. And then there are openings are here and here, so I’m gonna cover them again.

Alright, that’s probably… Maybe one more here. Probably good for the first one. And so we can do another one, and I’m just gonna put it on another layer just so I can move it around when we wanna arrange some things. So again, we’re just gonna do the little interlocking Cs and then just keep going around. I’m putting a little bit of pressure more on the center to make it a little thicker.

Maybe that makes it look a little bit like, on the side. Oops. There. I think that’s good. And then I’m gonna make one more. I think… Yes, let’s see. Maybe I’ll try to make this look a little bit more of a bud type thing. So again, just the interlocking Cs. I’m gonna try to make it a little bit more on its side. Let’s see if this works.

Make The Base

So I’m just trying to make the base… Oh, that would sort of go there. And that kind of works. Let me make it a little bit bigger. There. So it’s kind of a little bit of a bud on its side. So now, since we have these on our all different layers, we can go and arrange them. So I’m gonna grab that third layer at the bud and just grab my arrow… Oops. And not do that. I grab the arrow, maybe do it like this. And I’m gonna grab that second layer, grab the arrow, and just turn it. Maybe we’ll just tuck it in there like that.

Again, maybe I’ll just move this guy like that. Actually, I’m gonna tuck this guy away, more in here. Making my little much bigger and just kinda get him in there, I think. Yeah, maybe more like that. Okay, so I’m just gonna grab all of these guys and put them more in the center of my canvas. Lovely. Okay, so now it’s time for some foliage, so let’s just add a new layer, grab that light green and just have your pen at about 8% and we’re just gonna add some leaves here. So I’m just gonna use my pressure just to make the shapes.

So I’m just gonna do light pressure and then heavy pressure. Actually, you know what? I want this at about 12. Light pressure, heavy pressure. And kind of like that.

And I can connect these with some little stems here too. Maybe I’ll do that. Perfect.

This one’s a little bit much.

Alright, I think that’s good. And then I’m gonna grab the brown and I’m just gonna grab… Sorry, make another layer and just put some leaves in here. So just your typical leaf shape. I’m just gonna leave a little bit of white there too.

Alright, I’m gonna leave that for now. And then I’m gonna bring in some more berries and I’m gonna just create another layer, and just grab that purple and just really do free circles.

Check out all my watercolor clipart collections.

Alright. And then with the darker paint color that we have, I’m just gonna do a few different sizes here. You know what? I’m gonna do this. I’m gonna make it like kind of just pushing… Or sorry, just starting with light pressure and then a really heavy pressure, just to make these teardrop shapes. Maybe like that.

Okay, and then I’m gonna go back to this layer here. We have the brown and the green on here. Actually, I said I wanted a brown layer, but it seems that it went on the green layer, but that’s okay, we can just add a new layer. Grab that brown, and I’m gonna bring the size of the brush down to about 2%, just so we can do these little sticks, and I’m just gonna connect them together. Oops.

I’m just making some darker areas, just sort of here, to kinda create that vase. Oops.

Okay, so we have all our stems there, that looks good. Okay, next I’m going to… I think I’m gonna just do some sort of more subtle little leaves in the background, so I’m just gonna create a new layer and pop that down to 50% and grab the light green and pop this up to about 12% the size, and I’m just gonna do some subtle leaves in the background, just sort of fill it in. I don’t like that.

Okay, so I’ve kind of shifted over this way, so I’m just gonna grab all my layers by swiping to the right. I’ll click on my arrow and just bring everything into the center a little bit more. It just makes me happier.  So I think we just need to add a little bit more depth. So I’m gonna go back to the brown layer, layer six, and just… I’ll add just a few of these really simple little teardrops just here and there to kinda create a little bit more contrast. Yeah, I think that’s better.

Almost like a pattern kind of. I don’t know if that makes sense. Maybe it does. Sure. Alright, and let’s go to the green layer and grab that dark green, and maybe same, adding in a few here and there. That’s better. So wherever you feel it’s missing a little, a little something.

Is It Full Enough?

Okay, I think it’s full enough.  Alright, so the next thing I’m gonna show you is just a little extras to take this to the next level. I think this looks good the way it is but let’s just do a little bit more. So I’m gonna click on the top layer and I’m gonna go to my wrench and click on ‘Add’ and go to ‘Insert files.’

So the file of the watercolor texture is in the description below, so you can grab that there. And just say ‘Insert file’. I’ve put mine in my Dropbox. I’m just gonna grab my green handle and make it into this orientation and make it fill the canvas. Okay, well, that doesn’t do us very much good, but if we click on the layer, click on the ‘N’ and go to ‘Multiply’, it’s gonna give us that watercolor texture that just makes it look better. So, in my opinion, more watercolor-y.

And the next thing we’re gonna do, because it wouldn’t be one of my tutorials without a clipping mask, you guessed it, we’re gonna make one. So I’m gonna… We’re gonna merge all our roses together so it’s just one layer and then I’m gonna put a layer on top. Click on it.

Click on ‘Clipping Mask’ and then I’m gonna grab that darker pink. And now, since I’m in my ‘Water’ section, I’m gonna go and grab that ‘Water Bleed’. So that is a Procreate brush, you should have it. I haven’t changed any of the settings.

It is just the way it normally is, so hopefully you have that. Let me know if you don’t. I’m just gonna make this at about, I don’t know, 30%, somewhere around there. And I’m just gonna go and just use these edges.

Oops, I forgot to do one thing. I’m actually gonna change this to ‘Multiply’ blending mode, and that makes a big difference. Okay, so I’m just gonna go around and just kinda get some of these edges, and you can see it’s just making that… You know how watercolor, when it dries, it just has those little darker edges and stuff?

And this is just gonna give you some variation and some interesting colors and… Yeah, it’s just… I don’t know. It gives it a different look, I think. So do this if you want to, certainly not necessary, but I think that just gives a different kind of more interesting look.

Okay, so let me just see if I’ve got enough on here. So you can see this is with it, without, with it, without. So your choice if you like that look. And I’m gonna go to the berry layer, same thing, clipping mask, change it to ‘Multiply’, and just go ahead and add that extra bit to my berries and stuff here.

And yes, I am just using the dark pink on here. It’s alright, it works still.  Okay, so then I’m going to go to this layer with my green and accidentally some of my brown on here, but that’s alright.

I’m gonna just give that a ‘Clipping Mask’, change it to ‘Multiply’. I’m gonna grab the dark green and do that to these green areas here.

And I’m gonna go and use this purple actually on the brown, and just give it a little color variation here too. And you can actually bring that… I actually like purple on the green too, just sometimes on the tips. I do this with a lot of my actual, in real-life watercolor.

I add a little purple to the edges sometimes too, ’cause… Well, you can see it in real life, it sometimes looks like that.

Okay. And you can carry on, you can do… I am not gonna do this, the fainter ones, I’m just gonna leave them as is. And what about these guys? No, the twiggies can stay as they are. So I think that is it. I think we’re done for today. So I hope you’ve enjoyed this tutorial, and if you did, I’d love it if you hit that like button and subscribe.

And don’t forget to hit the bell icon so you can be notified of new tutorials just like this one in the future. I post every Tuesday, and I’d love to see you back here. So I love you guys, thank you so much for watching, and I’ll see you in the next one.

How to Use Clipart Properly for Commercial Purposes

How to Use Clipart Properly for Commercial Purposes – A Photoshop and Procreate Tutorial

Hey there. I’m Kris. So glad you made it today. I get asked a lot about commercial licensing and how to use Clipart or illustrations for commercial use. So today, I’m gonna show you how to do that. This video, I’ll describe how to use the illustrations correctly so you don’t get in trouble when you’re using Clipart on products that you wanna sell. So just to be clear, I’ll be going over my licensing terms for Pretty Little Lines and all of my illustrations that I sell.

They are pretty standard across the industry, but just be really careful that when you go and purchase Clipart or illustrations or anything else for that matter from other artists or other market places that you do check their licensing terms. They may be a little bit different than mine.

So again, this is specific to me, but I have made them pretty standard, so this should give you a good idea across the board. But yeah, just go and double-check. There might be something a little bit different, but hopefully, this gives you a good overview of how to use the Clipart for commercial purposes. So hopefully, this gave you some clarity. I know it can be a little tricky, but once you get it, it should make sense.

It’s Not As Difficult As It Seems

I know the legal language can be all kind of… I don’t know, just nonsensical sometimes. So hopefully, this helps you out. I’ll be giving you examples in both Photoshop and Procreate, so that should give you some ideas on how to use a pack from start to finish. So let’s get to it!

Before we begin, I’m just gonna do a quick overview of my commercial license, so you’re good to go for up to 5,000 units of the end product sold using the graphics or the resources. So for this, a lot of people’s might be a different number. For mine at this time of this video is 5,000 for commercial license, and if you’re using my brushes, then it’s unlimited sales because of course, you’re using that brush to create something new, so it’s a different type of license. But again, yeah, check on other people’s numbers on that for sure. And then next, this is the things we’re gonna cover the most today.

Always just being really careful of how you use the licensed asset. So with the graphics, you must create a new original design that are significantly different from the original graphics purchase and use them in a wider design. So to do this, you wanna combine elements, backgrounds, text, textures, and other designs into your new creation.

You Can’t Just Put It On A Colored Background And Call It Done

So this is what the original asset looks like, it is just these two bunnies. You can’t just put it on a colored background and call it done, that’s just using one element. You must combine multiple elements to create something new. You have to think like a graphic designer and use these elements to create something that requires some time and effort and thought and creativity.

So you can use text, you can use backgrounds, like I said, using multiple things from the pack. Making your own is always a great way to go as well, or incorporating things from other packs or other designs that you’ve purchased. So that’s what we’re gonna cover mostly today. Also, if you’re making products that are digital products, you have to be really, really careful with the digital products because you have to make sure that what you’re doing, you cannot extract any of the elements.

You must bake it in. I like to use that term, “it must be baked in” so that anything that is the original can’t be extracted in any way, shape or form, so that’s really, really important when you’re doing anything for digital work. The patterns, I’m not gonna go over major league patterns today, but it’s pretty simple, you can’t just use the pattern on its own, you have to use it as part of your wider design.

Never Ever  Sub-License

And lastly, of course, you never ever want to sub-license, resell, redistribute, provide access to, gift, share or transfer any of the resources that would be anything that you purchase or download from my site, not even for free.

So you’re not allowed to do that, of course, and you’re not allowed to claim copyright of the artwork that has my artwork in it. So hopefully, that… Not very fun.  Hopefully, that is clear. And this again, is part of my FAQ section on my site that you can have a look at for more details. So let’s get to the fun part. Okay, so let’s start from the very beginning.

You’ve gone on to my site or a site like mine and find an illustration Clipart pack that you would like to purchase. Today, let’s just use this cute little Valentine’s day one, since it’s coming up soon as our example. So we can go and on my site, you would click on here and you either would choose commercial license, extended commercial, or personal use.

So since we’re talking about commercial licensing, we’ll select that one, and then you add it to cart and purchase it and get your download link. Once you click on that download link, it will download onto your computer or your device, so it’ll most likely go into your downloads folder, so you’re just gonna find that here, that’s where mine goes, and you’ll see the love some bunny zip files.

Making A New Creation

So on the Mac, gonna double-click, I believe on a PC, you do as well. Otherwise, you have to use something like WinRAR or something like that.

So we’re just gonna double click and it’ll extract the files, and then you’ll have this folder here. So let’s open that up, and you have arrangements, bunnies, hearts, individual elements, love letters, tree branch, and of course, your commercial license.

So I’m gonna just look in the bunnies here, and we have cupid bunnies and laying bunnies. So every single thing that is in one of these folders is called a licensed asset or a resource, or of course, your graphic or illustration, but when I refer to the license assets or resource in the legal terms, that’s what it is, is each single one of these files.

So that’s what that is, and I’m going to open up Photoshop. And in it, I have already this prepared here. This is my… I’m gonna make a card today, so this is just a mock-up, and it is… The size is four and a quarter by five and a half inches and 300 dpi, So let’s use that as our template, and I’m gonna grab these two cute little bunnies sitting together, and pull down option and just resize them a little bit. Okay.

The New Design Must Consist Of More Than One Asset

So, of course we cannot leave it like this. One of the main stipulations of a commercial license like mine is that the new design must consist of more than one asset. So this, as you can see is just one asset. So that would be not allowed. So a big part of the commercial license is that you are creating a wider original design.

So that’s where your purchased resources are not used as standalone, but they’re combined with other resources, artwork or original design work. So you can add other things from the pack, other things from other packs or places that you’ve purchased. And of course, your own design work, which is very encouraged as well as texts, and textures, borders, anything like that. So you’re just trying to create something new. Okay, so that’s what we mean by original wider design.

So I’m gonna go and grab something else from the pack. I’m gonna go back and find in the arrangements and the wreaths, I’m gonna grab… Let’s see, which one shall I choose today? Maybe this one. Okay. So I’m just gonna again hold option just to keep that in the center and resize that a bit. Hit enter, gonna bring that wreath below and displace these guys a little bit better.

Two Things Isn’t Quite Enough

Okay, so already we have two things, but this still really isn’t quite enough. So I’m gonna go add a string, use the pink, tuck it in there. That’s probably good. Okay. So like I said before, a really great way to personalize this, make this an original design is by adding some text, that’s always a really easy one.

I’m just gonna make this… Actually, I’m gonna make this… Maybe this color. Let’s see how that goes. So I’m just gonna add some text. So I’m gonna say “I love you!” ’cause it is Valentine’s Day. And I’m gonna put that there. Maybe I’ll put it in the heart. I wonder if that’ll look okay, let’s see. Sure. Why not? I’m just gonna command T to resize.

Okay. Now of course with fonts, just side note, it’s the same thing, you need to have a commercial license to use fonts. I’m using Little Bee today, and I do have a commercial license for that font. There’s also a ton of other fonts that have commercial free licenses, which you can just download for free or they already come installed in your computer that are free to use for commercial use. So you just gotta double check on that as well. But already, we have this more personalized, right?

It Looks Different

It looks very different or somewhat different from just having this guy, right? Okay, so we’re making something new.

So I’m gonna go to the bottom. I’m just gonna delete that. I’m just gonna go to the bottom. And again, like I said, you can use other pieces from other packs or things that you have designed. So let’s say that you have made just a splash of paint, you can bring that in and put it behind as well. So there we’re already giving it something unique.

I’m just gonna adjust this color a little bit. So I’m gonna go to image adjustments, hue and saturation, and just make this pink a touch cooler, it’s a little bit warm. Compared to that. And I’m gonna just knock back the opacity a touch. Okay, that’s good. So what you are trying to accomplish with the original wider design is that it does require time, effort and skill to produce.

So this is what we’re doing right now. We are thinking, we’re designing; being graphic designers. We are creating something with the assets that is new to us. So that is really important. And we can keep going by… I’m gonna grab the shape tool, the rectangle tool, and I’m just on my bottom layer here, I’m just gonna add… I’m gonna add a border. And, so I’m gonna click on my stroke thing here. Just losing my mind.

Almost There

I’m gonna click on the stroke and change the color, and it’s gonna select this color, this pink, and bump up the width.

Let’s see. Okay, I think that’s good. Okay. Okay, then we can go and grab a paper texture also to add to this, I just have this watercolor paper texture I can add over top as well, it’s another way of making it unique and I’m just gonna put it on the very top, click on my blending mode and change it to multiply.

So then we have that texture on there. So that’s good, actually, I don’t really like where this I love you is. So I’m gonna change it.  I’m just gonna lock that layer and I’m gonna make this bigger. And I see that it’s still black, I forget what this… Just this font, it doesn’t allow you to change the color, you have to do a color overlay.

Which is fine, we can do that. And I just want it a little bit more brown. Okay. Good stuff. Okay, so I think that works. So we have a few elements in it, we’ve done an original text element or of course, if you’re good at hand lettering, I’m very jealous  jealous that you can do that. We’ve added something we’ve made by the watercolor splash and you have other elements.

Multiple Things Can Come From The Same Pack

I’m not saying that you have to have all of them. Just have some of them. And again, multiple things can come from the same pack or other things you’ve purchased, just you understand that it does take some effort, skill, time to produce.

You’re not just taking an image and putting it on a mug, you can’t. That’s just not part of the commercial license, unless, like I said, you have a special enhanced license. So for the commercial license, the assets should be used to facilitate your creative ideas that result in a new creation, different from the original asset that you’ve purchased. So you just can’t put a big bunny on it and call it done.

Okay, so let’s look at how this looks on our little mock-up here, I’m just gonna save it, and click over here, and there you go, so now you’ve made a card that is original design that complies with the commercial license, so next, let’s jump over to Procreate and I’ll show you another example there.

So you’ve downloaded the link onto your iPads, now we’re gonna go find it, you’re gonna look for the folder, and mine’s gonna be my Dropbox, yours is probably gonna be in the download.

So just ’cause that’s where I put it. I’m just gonna go find it and I’m actually gonna drag it into on my iPad just to keep this organized, and I’m just gonna click on it and it should unzip for us, into a nice little folder. Here we go, and open it up and here are all the files, so that’s good. So now I’m just gonna go out of here, I’m gonna jump into Procreate, and my canvas is just gonna be the same size, it’s gonna be four and a quarter by five and a half inches, we’re just gonna make a little invitation, so let’s get to it.

So I’m gonna go to my wrench and say add, insert file, just click on the hop into spring and let’s go grab our characters, so I’m gonna start with a girl, the girl in the swing, just bring her in here. I’m just gonna resize her down actually, I’m gonna flip her this way, so I’m gonna be on uniform and flip horizontal, and I’m just gonna make it a little bit smaller there, and I’m gonna go back to the wrench, insert file, and let’s find some bunnies.

So I think I’m gonna get this little one, and again, just resizing that. I’m gonna have her pushing her on the swing. Back to the wrench, and let’s get this little lazy guy over here. I’m gonna resize him and flip him horizontally. Put him around there, and insert file. That’s probably good for our characters, why don’t we get the tree?

Let’s get the birch tree here and put that in there. Okay, and so now we can move around our little guys here. We should be there. So one will be out there. About there, I think. Okay, I don’t really like how this line is right here, so I’m just gonna make this guy a little bit bigger so that makes more sense.

Okay, but now I gotta move the bunny down, ’cause she’s just floating. Okay, perfect. Right, so let’s go get some picnic stuff, so I’m just gonna go to layer one, just so all this goes behind and go to… Actually, while I’m here, I’m just gonna grab some of these little grass here, and just put it there and maybe a few flowers. Just arranging. That’s all we gotta do. Flip it. Maybe… Let’s go over here. Actually, I’m gonna bring this in front of the tree, just moving it up and just resize that guy there.

Perfect. Okay, I think that’s good. Now, I’m gonna go and get some stuff for the picnic, so I’m just gonna navigate back here and go into extras, and I’m gonna grab the picnic, start with the blanket. Just resize that. And like I said, I wanted this behind. There. And I might just make it a little touch bigger.

Okay. And add file and get the open basket. Let’s see… Oops. Maybe that grass is not the right spot for that. That was crazy. Maybe I’ll just put it over there for now, I might not need it. We’ll see.

Okay, so just rearrange this. I don’t know if I want to have his head in the way there, so let’s just move the bunny this way, but… Okay, and now let’s go behind the basket, so that when we put stuff in it, they come behind, I’m gonna grab the baguette, and just size and rotate. Just till we get what we want here. Let’s see… Oops.

Let’s see, okay, some jam. And what else? Cheese, and let’s go with an apple. That looks good. Maybe one more thing for the front here. Let’s put this in front of the basket. Great, and maybe we can bring that grass back, here we go, let’s just bring him back. Oh, keep resizing it, let’s just bring it back over here, maybe that will be good.

Be somewhere like that. Okay, perfect, I like that. Okay. So I’m gonna just go and grab some text since this a… It’s an invitation card, so I’m gonna… I did my text already in Photoshop before, ’cause I just prefer to use text that way, so if you’re again a hand letterer or just getting your fonts here, then we can just bring them in or do them actually in Procreate as well.

Okay, so I think that’s probably good. And lastly, I think lastly, we can go add some original stuff as well because we’re in Procreate, so it’s really simple to do. I’m just gonna put a layer down below, and I’m just going to… Let’s see, just gonna select this little blue color here and just bump it up a little bit, and with my Spectra brush at about 50, let’s just add some color, add some background and it’ll be kind of painted, and then we can go and add another layer. Grab the white, I’m gonna get the gouache, set at about 10.

I’m gonna add little clouds, this is really simple, you don’t have to do much, but just adding a few little extras here and there just really makes it original, which is nice too.

Here we go, and I think I’m gonna change the color of this hop into spring. Let’s see, I’m just gonna put a layer over top, click on that clipping mask and let’s make it maybe… Let’s start with this pink. It’s not dark enough, let’s try again. Let’s just make it this pink, I need it darker though. That’s probably okay.

Maybe a little bit more saturated than that. Let’s try that. Okay, I think that should be alright. And then what else can we do? I mean, you can make those clouds look a little bit more interesting, it’s just the point is that you’re having fun making something new, adding something different, you can make a few curlies here.

Make it sort of interesting. Okay, there, so that’s just a really simple way to make a cute little invitation using Clipart, so this is totally fine for commercial use, you’ve added things together, you’ve made it in your own design, and it’s something original, so… And everything is baked in, like I like to say, you can’t extract any of the images, so that’s also how to do it as well, and just to note, any of the graphics that I used today, I will put in a link down below. If you like them, you can grab them there.

To Sum It Up

So I hope this has been helpful. And next, let’s just do a review. Let’s just recap how to use Clipart for commercial use.

First, and most importantly, the design must consist of more than one asset, so the design must not derive its primary value from the asset itself. So you’re gonna have to use multiple things to create a wider original design. So what is a wider original design? It is where either purchase resource is not used stand-alone, but combined with other resources, artwork or original design work.

So to do this, you can combine other elements, backgrounds, text, textures and other designs into your new creation. That can be multiple things from the pack as well as other things from other people’s designs or your own. So get creative there, and this design must require time, effort and skill to produce, just like our example today, the new design must be significantly different from the original license asset, the license asset should be used to facilitate your creative ideas that result in a new creation different from the original asset that you purchase.

Make sure that your designs are baked in and the original artwork can not be extracted by a third party, never share or redistribute, resell or sub-license any of the resources. Even if it’s for free, you have to be in control of the resources, your customer cannot edit them in any way.

So just to note on sub-licensing, sub-licensing is when you sell to a customer that is going to sell a product, so that’s not allowed, so what you wanna do is, your customer, it needs to end with them, so that’s what I mean by an end product. So for example, if you sell templates, let’s say embroidery templates, and you sell them to a customer who’s then going to make a line of clothing and is going to sell that clothing, that would be sub-licensing.

So you have to be really careful about that. Some designers, you can talk to them about sub-licensing sometimes, there are contracts and deals you can do, so that would be a total exception, and that would be something that you’d wanna talk to them separately about.

Alright. Well, that’s it for today, guys, I hope you found that information useful and it was really clear and you know what, you can always send me stuff and just, you know, if you’ve made a wider design and you kinda wanna see if you’ve done it right, by all means just throw it over in an email, I’m happy to check it out for you if you have any questions, and again, you can check out my website, I have a whole FAQ section there.

I’m sure it’ll be growing as I get more questions, I’m just trying to answer those regularly asked questions, so you can check it out there. I think it’s pretty straightforward. I have visual examples which I always like. So hopefully that helps you and yeah, don’t forget to check out the description below. There’s some free goodies for you if you wanna check those out. And again, thank you so much for watching. I love you guys. And I’ll see you in the next one.

How to Create Designs with Clipart in Photoshop & Procreate

Hey guys, I’m Kris and welcome back to the studio. Today, I’m gonna be showing you my new project, it’s an animal baby nursery clipart pack that I wanna show you how to use in your next creative projects. So I’m gonna go through a demo in Photoshop and then in Procreate so you can see the differences, but you certainly don’t need those programs to use this clipart pack. They’re all PNG files, so you can use whatever graphics editor that you’re comfortable with, and the same principles will apply, so you will still be able to learn lots from this demo. This pack is really cute, it’s a bunch of baby animals that are perfect for nursery themes or anything super cutesie that you like animals for, and it will be available on Monday, December 7th, so if you’re just watching this before then, it’s a sneak peek, so I’m really excited to show it to you. So, let’s get started, we’ll jump into Photoshop first and I’m gonna show you how to make a sublimation template for a pillow. So, let’s get to it.

Okay, so you’ve decided to grab this cute little pack here, it’s a bunch of clipart perfect for nursery and baby stuff or anything just cutesie, like I said. So, anyways, you’ve grabbed this and you’ve downloaded it, and now what do you do? So, you wanna go into your downloads folder, and then you’re gonna click on the zip file. So, on a Mac, you’re just gonna double-click and it’s gonna unzip for you. On a PC, you are going to have to use WinZip, I believe, and open it that way. And so now you have this folder, so let’s go peek inside. It’s gonna bring this open for you. So, you have your license, of course, animals, arrangements, balloons, banners, a bunch of extras, flowers, hot air balloons, numbers, stars, moons, and clouds, swings and teacups. Okay, so we can just peak in here and you can see there’s 12 animals, and hopefully, these are arranged easily so you can find everything. There’s flowers, lots of balloons. Okay, so you can see that there’s lots of fun things to create lots of different sorts of things. So, why don’t we jump into Photoshop and I’m gonna create a new file, so I’m gonna go File New, and I’m going to say this is going to… Actually, we’re gonna do inches ’cause this is going to be for a pillow. Let’s say our pillow is 18 inches by 18 inches, and because it’s print, we’re gonna do 300 DPI.

Alright, so there’s our new file. So, what I’m gonna do is go and grab some elements to put in it. So today, I kinda love this elephant, it’s one of my faves. So, I’m just gonna drag him in and hit Enter. Then, I’m gonna go and I’m gonna grab a banner, and I kinda like this one, so I’m gonna pop that over like that. Enter. And you know what? Let’s just size it a little bit, I’m gonna do Command or CTRL+T to transform and just bring that a little bit larger, just that kinda goes around his feet a little bit. Okay, and I’m gonna go back to my finder and let’s go… Let’s see, what shall we do? Perhaps flowers, and I’m going to… Let’s see, I’m gonna put some behind. Actually, you know what? Let’s do this. Take this, I’m just gonna place that like that maybe, and you can actually use these already premade ones or you can go into flowers and all the individual flowers and leaves are here. So, why don’t we do that? I wanna just grab a couple, so I’m gonna hold that Command, just grab a few more. Let’s do that one again and the sun and grab that. Oh, just a bunch of stuff. They all coordinate, they’ll all go together.

Okay, let me grab a little eucalyptus maybe. Alright, let’s see how… Maybe I’ll grab that too. Okay. I’m just gonna drag them all in and I’m just gonna hit Enter a bunch of times, I think I’m just gonna resize these all together. Okay, so a few more, got it. Okay, so over here, I’m just gonna go into my layers and grab all those flowers and I’m gonna do Command or CTRL+G to make that a group, I’ll be good and name it flowers. Sometimes I can be terrible when I’m doing this  and not name things. So, I’m gonna grab that group and do Command or CTRL+T again and just resize these guys all at once to about there, I think, and hit Enter. And wait,  and then I’m gonna drag my flowers below the banner, in between the banner and the elephant. And then, just start, I don’t know, placing these around, see what happens. Let’s just fill it up a bit and kind of maybe you want some of these guys to go in between, so I’m gonna just drag this layer up in between some of the roses for variation. I might have to resize some of these guys here, so Command T. I’m just gonna play around with it. Okay, I might have a few too many in here, but we’ll see. Bring that up above the leaves, there he is. I just want it nice and full.

Maybe bring this one over here and CTRL+T or Command T. Put that in there, okay. And I feel like I need a little bit more green over here, so I’m gonna ____ this. Command or CTRL+J, CTRL+T, and just make a duplicate there. Actually, I kinda wanna, in between these two flowers, just to break that up, so let’s see if we can find those. Oh, yeah. Got it. Okay, so that looks pretty full, I’m gonna bring the elephant up, so I’m just gonna click and drag just to select all of this and pull her up a little bit. Okay, that’s probably good. And I’m gonna just drag and select everybody and CTRL+T, control or command. Maybe that’s getting tired. You know what I mean when I say, “Command” or “Control.”  So, I’m just gonna make that a little bit smaller and hit Enter.

Wait a sec. Okay, so that’s probably good. We can personalize this by putting their name on it, which is always a nice touch, so I’m going to just go on the top layer, grab my text tool, and I’m going to… I really like little B, but it doesn’t let me warp the letter, so let’s try Elise, let’s see how this works out and we’re gonna call her Ella the Elephant. Okay, yeah, that should work alright, I’m gonna make this color… Let’s just make it… Let’s make it a nice brown color maybe around there. Okay, and then I wanna go to character and I don’t wanna bold, but I do want it more spaced. Let’s see if 200 is enough. Maybe let’s make it three. Okay, and we can bring that into the middle and I’m gonna make it 72?

Sure. Okay, so then I’m gonna go back and make sure I have my text tool. I’m going to go to the warp, I create warp text button, and I’m going to click on “Arc.” And that is not the way we want it to go. We want it to go subtly in this direction, just a little bit. I think that’s probably good. Okay, nice. And I’m gonna set this layer actually to multiply just so it catches that water color paper texture a little bit, and so I think it’s looking pretty… I mean, it was pretty quick to create something like this, I’m just adding a few things, making it your own, and then I’m gonna go to the background layer and so let’s just put something behind it. So, in the extras file, I’ve got some hearts and washes here. So, you just have these things you can put in the background, so I’m gonna grab the pink splash and that’s just a water color splash, can do… Yeah, it works actually just like that, it’s perfect. Let’s see if we add some hearts, if it’s too much, too little, let’s have a look… Oh, why not throw some hearts in there? It looks like this, so it’s mostly covered by the elephant, but I like the little bits. Okay, and I think we might have to, again, select everything and just move it down just a touch. Yeah, I think that looks good. Might need to be a little bit smaller, but we’ll see.

Okay, so I’m gonna go and save this. Actually, I’m going to turn off this background layer and save it as a PNG, so I can put it on whatever background color I want, so I’m gonna go to Save and I’m going to… Well, I’ll just create a new folder, I’ll call it “Nursery,” I guess. And we can call this “Ella.” Oops, “Ella pillow.” And of course, we’re gonna wanna save our PSD file just in case you ever wanted to go back and make any changes, and then I’m going to also save it as a PNG. And there we go, I mean that’s pretty straightforward, nothing too crazy, just placing PNGs. Why don’t we now go and see what it would look like in a mockup? This isn’t my favorite mockup, but it’ll give you the idea, so we’re just gonna go back to our finder and grab that PNG and drag it into this mockup here. I’m just gonna scale it a touch, and let’s see what it looks like. So, I’m just gonna do CTRL or Command+S for save, and look at the mockup. This one kinda skews slightly to the right, it would seem, but let’s just… We can do this. Oops, sorry. We can do this, just move it over a little bit and have a look. Still. These mockups are sometimes a little bit funny, but  here we go.

You see, I don’t like this silly texture that they have on here, but anyways, you get the idea. There you go. There’s a little cute personalized pillow. So, the reason why I have all these illustrations as individual elements is so that you have the most flexibility and freedom to create totally unique designs. Yeah, it’s just, I’m just trying to give you as much flexibility as possible. So, of course, I couldn’t create this all and have it pre-done, that would be super easy, but if I did that, then you’d be really, really limited in what you could create. So, just even by having these backgrounds, that really helps because you, of course, don’t wanna be using any of these images standalone, and you don’t want it to be easily extracted by third parties. So, you just need to be conscious of that when you’re working with clipart, so why don’t we jump into Procreate next and I’ll show you how to make something very similar using that program. So, let’s jump to it. Okay, so you have downloaded the pack onto your iPad, so what do you do next? You go and find your little files tab here, you’re gonna open it up, yours are probably going to be in your downloads section, but I transferred mine through Dropbox, so mine’s in Dropbox. So, you’re gonna find that zip file, mine’s right here. You’re gonna click on it.

And it’s just gonna open up. It should do. Now, if you have this problem and it doesn’t do this for you, try taking that zip file and moving it over to on my iPad, and it should work there for you. So again you can, well let’s do it, click on it and it should give you, if you click on Hold, it should give you the option to uncompress. So try that otherwise you might have to download, there’s a free app, I think it’s called Zip app, and you can download that and give it a go. So that’s how you do that. Now we can pop into, well actually I should show you. So we can look in there and you can see we have all the files, just like we had on the computer. So now we’re gonna hop back into Procreate. I wanna create a new canvas, and I’m going to make this 18 inches by 18 inches or 5400 by 5400 pixels at 300 DPI. And I’m gonna go and grab my elements. So I’m going to click on my wrench and I’m going to go to add and insert file, and I’m just gonna click on this little ____ and bring out these menus. So I’m going to say it’s on my iPad now, and I’m gonna click on the animal babies deal there, and I’m going to, let’s make a hot air balloon.

So I’m gonna click on that, and it’ll bring up all my illustrations here and let’s see. What shall we pick? I really like the flower one, but I’m going to do this one for you. So let’s click on this multi-colored balloon. Click yes. Perfect. I’m gonna leave it like that. So then I’m gonna go back to the wrench, add insert file and let’s grab some more things. Let’s make this blue this time. I’m gonna click on this little, this deal, add that, and I’m going to go and insert file again, and this time, let’s do the basket. I’m just gonna bring all of my elements in here. Add another file. Let’s see, should we do some flags? I’m gonna do these blue and pink flags. That should work. Okay, let’s arrange this before we get anything more. So now that these are all on separate layers, which is great, so I’m actually just gonna select them all just by dragging to the right, clicking my arrow, and resizing these attached so just we have some more room here. That should be fine. Okay, about there. Okay, and then I’m gonna bring my basket down, resize that guy. That can be about there. Well I guess I can make the handles work. Maybe about that. Then I’m gonna go grab the flags, resize those. Perfect. And it looks like these are the right size. I’m just gonna angle these a little bit more. So that’s good.

Okay, hopefully you can see that there. So let’s go get a character to add to this. I’m just gonna stay on my ribbon layer just ’cause that’s behind the basket, so I’m gonna go grab, let’s see. Oops… Turning that around. Let’s go back to animals and let’s put in the, who should we put in today? How about our… Oh giraffe. Okay, let’s size him and put him in there. Perfect. And let’s see what else can we do? Why don’t we dress this little guy up a little bit. Make him fancy. Okay so insert file. My youngest son, for some crazy reason, is obsessed with top hats and monocles right now, so I had to make those.  So let’s go and find him a hat. We have all these sorts of hats and tiaras and crowns and all those sorts of fun things. So let’s give him a little hat. He likes green, so we’ll do that. Give him a little jaunty top hat. Just that cute. And then we can go oops, I don’t want gallery. Sorry. Back in, grab the wrench, insert file and he’s got this monocle. And I think I’m going to have to flip this guy, so I’m just gonna click on, while I’m in transform, just gonna click horizontal and actually no.

That was alright, on the right side there. Just keep it like that, so let’s see. So that’s cute. Gives him a little, very distinguished nature there.  Okay, so then I’m gonna go and let’s see, maybe let’s do some background. So I’m gonna click on that and go and find, what shall we find. Some stars and moons and clouds. So these guys have faces or no faces depending on what you want. I’m just gonna start with some simple clouds first. Let’s make those smaller. It’s just add a few, I’m gonna bring this below the hot air balloon and just duplicate and maybe one more. And I’m gonna flip them, flip horizontal, resize a little bit. Let’s see what works here, maybe there. Okay, and then I’m gonna go, maybe let’s get some stars.

And just place that around and duplicate just by sliding to the left and click ‘Duplicate,’ click on your arrow and then just move in the size around a little bit, slide to left, duplicate… You can keep doing this as many times as you want to here. Okay, so that’s pretty good. And then I’m going to go and grab… Let’s see, maybe it will get us… Oh, so seeing I have too many layers, so I’m just gonna go and pinch these, all these stars together till they’re on one layer, and then I wanna go back to wrench and start another file. What was I going to do? I was… Oh yeah, so I was going to get a splash here, and let’s see, I’ll get up the blue one and that actually placement-wise is not too bad, I’m gonna bring it behind this one here. So, if you wanted to make any changes to any colors, let’s say this cloud here… Where is this guy, where is he? So, this cloud here, if we wanted to change the color of him, we can just go and click on a layer, tap on it to clipping mask, and I’m just gonna make it a little bit lighter just to see what happens. So obviously, that doesn’t look very good. So, we’re gonna have to change the blending mode to something, change it to… Let’s see what will work with soft light.

Soft light, just lightens it up a little bit. If you wanna do that, that’s not the greatest example for wanting to exchange these colors,  but you get the idea. Okay, so let’s just bring in this cloud a little bit, I think he’s a little bit too far down our composition. Okay, like that, and then I’m gonna go and select all these layers, just swiping to the right. Okay, and then I’m just gonna grab this and just move it more into the center now. Okay, so I think that’s a cute little composition for another little pillow. Super simple, that was really, really quick. It only took me a couple of minutes, and of course, maybe you could, if you’re really good at lettering or something, you could write their names or get that cute font and put that in there and write that. And yeah, just have fun with it. So I hope that was really simple. I didn’t do anything too complicated, and I don’t think there really is anything too crazy to have to do as far as mobile Photoshop and Procreate, really. I think it’s just bringing in layers and just layering them  and yeah, but just putting them all together.

I hope that’s really helpful for you, guys, and if there’s anything else you want me to show you how to use these packs, please let me know on the comments, or of course, you can always join the Facebook group. I’d love to see you there, and yeah, you can just let me know if you have any more things that you’d like me to show you. Well, thanks so much for watching guys. I hope you enjoyed that video, and if you did, I’d love a thumbs up and subscribe if you haven’t already, and of course, check out in the description below. All the information will be there about where to find this pack, and of course there’s some free goodies for you as well, if you haven’t grabbed those. So, I love you guys, thank you so much for watching and I’ll see you in the next one.

How To Draw A Gnome Santa In Procreate

Hi guys, I’m Kris. Welcome to this week’s tutorial. Let’s draw together. In this week’s tutorial, we’ll be drawing a Santa Claus in Procreate, and I’m sure you can create this, too, if you follow along with the video all the way to the end. If you feel rushed, be sure to hit pause and just rewind to catch up, and save this video to your library, so you can re-watch if you need extra practice. Today, we’ll be using all three brushes found in Procreate, and don’t forget, once you finish this entire video, share it on Instagram and tag me in the image, as well as in the description, so I can find your artwork and feature you here on the Next Draw Together video. For this video, I’ve made you a free color palette, in case you like to use the exact colors I’ll be using during this tutorial, and you can just tap on the link below in the video description where you can download and install it into Procreate. Also, below there, you’ll find a link to a goodie bag where you can find some free goodies and support me by visiting my shop there. So let’s get to it and get your pen, and we’re gonna set up our canvas, and I’ll be creating this one at 4000×4000 pixels, 300dpi and sRGB.

Let’s Start

All right, so let’s start this one by grabbing our sketching pencil, so I’m gonna go in the sketching section and grab my 6B, that’s fine, and I’m just gonna use this charcoal color, and I’m as always, start with a few shapes. This is gonna be a funny Santa, he’s gonna be a little bit more on the triangular side, so let’s start with that. His basic body shape is gonna be… Oh, I don’t know, like that , kind of a funny guy, and then I’m gonna have a hat on him, of course, and that’s going to be another triangle, like that, and then his beard is gonna be an inverted triangle, something like that. So quite gnome-like, I know that’s kind of in right now, but it’s kind of a gnome Santa. I don’t know, sort of, sort of but not quite. And his hat’s gonna come around like that, something like that, right? I don’t know what that doodle is. Anyway, it goes like that, and his hat’s gonna have some fur here, so you can see already we’re seeing Santa a little bit.

So we’re just gonna put his nose right here, the beard maybe will come like that. I don’t know, some feet , something like that, and I’m gonna give, do that belt down here, give him a big old belt buckle, and, actually, I might just bring this up. So I’m gonna click on this S squiggly line, be in freehand and add, and just grab it with my little pointer and bring that up a bit. I forgot I need some room for the trim of his coat here. Something like that, and then that will be the trim. Kind of like that. This will be all like that, and then I’m just gonna have his funny little arms. One will be coming in like that. His little hand, maybe just like a circle and a little thumb, and we will have him kind of saying hey, like that. Something along those lines.

This Little Santa…

This little Santa is part of my new winter pack that’s out right now, or will be out soon, I think, if it’s not already. He was really fun to make. All right, so already Santa’s looking pretty good. Just being really loose, I think, at the beginning of your drawing is really fun and just keeps you, makes your lines a little bit more interesting, not too rigid. That’s why I always love to do a sketch before I do my final sketch. I don’t go straight to sort of my official line work. I like just to work it out, keep it loose, make mistakes, all that kind of good stuff. Yeah, so that’s looking good so far. I’m just gonna go in and add another layer on top and bump our rough sketch way back down to, I don’t know, 15%, something like that, and we’ll start going over with our final line work.

I’m just gonna grab this brown color, and I’m gonna go into inking and get my dry ink that I love to use for my line work, and just go and get some lines down. I’m gonna keep it kind of loose and a little bit scratchy. Sorry, I’m gonna tell you exactly what line weight I’m gonna use. It is gonna be at 8%, and that’s gonna be at 100 opacity, so just keeping it a little loose. I want this to be a little bit of a more sketchy drawing. I’ll go in there. I’m just using the different pressure on the pen to create some interest. That’s good. This actually is going to be a bell, so I’m gonna just make these little lines here, like that. Something like that, and let me do his coat right now.

I’ll just seal in a little bit for you here, just for these little wisps, just kind of for the furry, just keep it light, and we’ll give him a hand, a little thumb, just a thumb and a round bit like that. More of a he.  Okay? And then bringing his arm in. Little bits for the fur, kind of round in the circle here. That’s pretty good. Get that belt, and then make it just so it looks like it’s coming around there like that. It’s not a completely flat line. You can see that little bit there. Makes it a little bit more rounded. And then for belts, you’re always gonna have this tab that comes over, and then around in the circle that goes into, and then the big belt buckle, something like that. Alright, oops… And around.

Little Shoesies?

So I’m gonna give him his little shoesies. Little platform to his shoes and they’re gonna be kind of, I don’t know, rectangular a little bit, a rounded rectangle. Good. And then we’re just gonna do… This is gonna all be fluffy, so I’m gonna try to keep it irregular, a little bit rounded, kind of like that. Hopefully you can see that. Okay, let’s get his nose here, and these little whiskers are going… Woops, not exactly how I wanted it. Okay, so these little wispies, his nose is gonna be covering them a little bit. Actually, I wanna make this a little bit thicker. This wispy, wispy. Actually, I want these a bit rounder too. Okay, his little hat, then his beard is just gonna come… Actually, the guy I made did have a little bit of a curl, but you don’t want it to touch, and I’ve gone too low, so it’s gonna come up like that. There. Woops… Just a few thinner dashes just with using a lighter pressure on my pen just to do that, not quite as thick of a stroke. This little variation makes it look better, I think.

Okay, almost there. And then his little face, so his beard is gonna just come from here. I shouldn’t apply it too wispy, just like that, and his little eyes are gonna be in here. Oops, let’s make them closer. These circles are not working out here. There we go. Better. And his little mouth is just gonna be a light pressure and a push, like that. There he is. So now I can just turn off that layer below and just erase that mistake, and then we are ready to do some more details. So with the line work, I’m actually gonna go and find the hair brush, and it is somewhere around here in touch-ups, and I’m just gonna use the fine hair and see how that goes, just to do… Yeah, so I’m gonna have it at… Let’s see… It is at 10%. Let me just try the short hair, too. No, I don’t like that. Okay, I like the fine hair, and I’m just gonna give him just some edges here, just edges to the fur, and just a few little swipes. It’s just gonna give us a little shading actually and just a little line work, so keep it irregular, but with the flow of where the hairs would go.

More Texture

Just giving us a little bit more texture on this, and I’m gonna do it a little bit over here sort of get the… Sort of the direction of where the beard is going a little bit. I’m gonna throw some in here too, just little… Again, I want this to be more of a textured piece. Been with that. This bit is too… Oops, ____. This makes it look a little fluffy. And oh, I realized I’ve forgotten one bit of this outfit here. One very Santa-esque outfit, and that’s the fluff that comes down the front here that we need to add… Okay, so I wanna just go back to my inking with that dry brush and just add this bit. So we have a bit of a line here, and then you’re gonna have the rest of his little suit here. Right. It was just that bit, so I will go back to… What did I say was in touch ups? Fine hair, and just add this little bits here.

Okay. So then I’m just gonna go back and grab my inking brush and the dry brush and just add the rest of this detail. I’m gonna erase this line here and I’m gonna add the belt in here like that, so that would end there. Okay. That finishes that up. Okay, I don’t think we’re missing anything else, so I’m just gonna go on and delete my sketch layer, we really don’t need that anymore. Create a new layer and pop that underneath our line layer. And I’m going to fill in all the sections and solid fill first, and then I’ll show you how I’m gonna paint them. So I’m just gonna go grab the red. At this point, it actually really doesn’t matter which color, but we’ll go with the red, and I’m gonna grab my studio pen and just go around filling this in. And then I’m just gonna drag my color and fill that going in there.

Create Another Layer

Okay. And then I’m gonna go and create another layer and fill that in with the skin color, so that would just be his face here. And then on this layer, I’m gonna just do the yellow as well, so… ‘Cause they’re not gonna be touching. So that’s alright. Okay, and then in the layer below, I’m just gonna add another one and use that charcoal, and do his gloves and belt and shoes. Okay. So there we have our basic… Oops, missed a mitten, almost had it. There we go. Okay, so there we have our basic Santa color, and that’s fine, we can do this, but I would prefer to make it more painted and a little bit more interesting, so I’m going to go in and fill… Instead of having these colors, I’m gonna actually fill them all with white and then I’m gonna paint over top and use that kind of as a solid fill, so that if we’re doing PNGs that they’re all solid where we’ve painted as well as I can just paint within these lines by using clipping masks. So I’m gonna start with the Santa, and I can just go ahead with the white and drag and drop the white in there, and same with the black layer. Take that.

Or you can just use a clipping mask, it would be quicker,  or just like this. So you add another layer on top. Click it. Click. Click it. Clipping mask and then just drag it in there, and then you just can merge down. So that’s two ways to do it. So now it looks like we’re back near at the beginning again, but don’t worry, we’re gonna have some fun. So click on your layer to where you have Santa’s main coat, like the red color, hit plus, click on your layer five and hit clipping mask. Let’s grab that lighter red color and go find some interesting paint brushes to paint with. So I’m gonna start with the Spectra brush, and I’m going to… It looks like this. I’m gonna bump this up to maybe about 30% and just lightly wash. And I’m gonna go over again, I just wanted to look texture-y, and you can see nice textures here, just lightly, so if I push hard, of course, it’s gonna be like that, and if I go really lightly, it just adds a little bit.

More to it. Okay, so I’m gonna leave it like that, and then I’m going to go… Actually, I gonna skip on this red and let’s try another brush. Let’s do the stucco and just… It’s gonna be at… Let’s go with 30% with us as well. Just slightly go over him like this. Lots and lots of texture. Okay, and then I’m gonna go grab that darker red and go get the Fresco. Let’s see what this does. Perfect. Okay, so I’m gonna be at 30% again, just lightly. Getting some sort of that painted bits on it here too. Alright, just little circles and maybe few splotches. Gets it off. Okay, so that’s looking good. I’m gonna go and add another layer on top of that and also make that a clipping mask. So, these two will be paired to the one below. Gonna grab that yellow, and use that gouache, and just give a little subtle color. Just really lightly, just to the side, just to the edges a little bit. Not too much. Don’t go crazy. Just a little interest. Here, I don’t know if you can see it or not, but here, I’ll show you. So, that’s filled out with, just warms it up a little bit.

Grab The Blue

And then I’m gonna go grab the blue, do the opposite on this side, just giving it a little bit of cooler tone. My gouache is… Well, actually my gouache can be about 25. Might be a little bit easier. There we go. Okay, and then I’m just gonna go above the red layer and add another layer and get that dark red again. Continue with my gouache. Bring that down to about 10 and just to focus on so many shadows here. So, just where there would be some. Making him look a little bit more rounded. Maybe a little bit under the beard. Under this hat here, maybe bring that down to maybe about five just to get these fold bits here. Back up to 10. I think it may have ended up at 12. It’s alright. Just trying give this, so it’s not too flat. Good stuff. Okay. So, then, I’m going to go to the belt, like the black layer. So, the belts, and the shoes, and the little mitts, add a layer on top of that, click on that clipping mask and go in and grab that charcoal and stay with my gouache for minute here, and just get that belt going. Just layering. And I’m gonna grab maybe that, let’s do the Fresco, bring it back to you about 10… Well, that wasn’t 10%. 10%. Just getting that in there.

Different textures on here. As you can see, they just have a little bit more interest then just flat colors. Okay, and then we’ll do the yellow layer. So, I’m gonna click on that layer 3, add the plus, click on it again, and clipping masks, and go and grab that warm orange. We can stick with the Fresco. That’s fine for now, and as I layer it, it gets darker, which is nice, and fill that in. Good, okay, so I’m also going to, while we’re on this layer, do that skin color, and I’m gonna grab the gouache and just color in his little face here. So, I’m gonna pick up that lighter red color and just really lightly, just give him a little bit of warmth on his nose. Actually, I’m gonna make it just a little bit smaller, maybe about five. Just a little warmth on his nose. Maybe give him a little color and his cheeks.

That’s good. Okay, we’re getting there. While we’re here, I can go to the very top above my… At the very top layer, just add the plus sign, I’m gonna add some highlights. So grab the white, and I’m gonna go back and get my inking, the dry ink brush. Just do a few highlights here and there. I want on his nose. Let me get the smudge tool and I can just leave it on… I can have it on vine charcoal or even just the soft brush or the airbrush, have it to about 2% and 80% opacity, and just… On that just a little bit, just not as quite so hard there. Okay, grab the white again and just give it a little highlight on here. Maybe a bit on top a little bit. His little shoes. Have a little something. I don’t know if the top of his belt leather might pick it up a little bit. So we’re gonna take our blender again and just blend that just a little bit. There. Okay. You know what? I know this is cloth, but I’m just gonna put a little bit up here too, and just give that a bit of a better blend. There. Okay. So then I’m going to grab the blue color and grab… Let’s see, I’m gonna go back to the painting and get the… Let’s do this ____ go back to the layers, and I’m gonna go… Layer am I going to do. Actually, it doesn’t matter. We can stay on this highlight layer for this, so I’m just gonna do a little bit.

The Finish

I’m gonna bring this down to about 8% and just where… Bring this down to about 60% and just add a little bit in where… Just really lightly, just to add to where all the white is, just to add a bit of shadow, show that it has a texture there. Do that along the beard, just really like… I’m not pushing hard. Just really lightly kind of circles again. Maybe a little bit along here too. Just feathery. Give it a little bit more dimension. Alright, he’s looking good. Okay, what often I like to do is just go back to my line layer and go grab that brown again and the inking, the dry ink, just really sometimes bump up a few bits and pieces, just getting some… Make sure the lines are the way I want them to be. I give a few bit of shading lines. Not like that. My outlined to be fairly strong. A little bit of shading along here. Just a little bit sketch here in some places. Good. I really want this to pop out in front. Okay. And last, I’m going to back to my highlights layer. I forgot the last little highlight. Let’s just give him a little dot on these eyes here. And there we go, I think he’s done for today, so I hope you’ve enjoyed this tutorial, and if you did, please hit that like button and subscribe and don’t forget to hit the bell icon so you can be notified of new tutorials, just like this one. How To Draw A Cute Bear In Procreate

Hi guys, I’m Kris welcome to this week’s tutorial, let’s draw together. In this week’s tutorial, we’re gonna be drawing a cute little bear in a pumpkin spice cup in Procreate and I’m sure you can create this too if you follow along all the way to the end. If you feel rushed, be sure to hit that pause button or just rewind to catch up and save this video to your library so you can re-watch if you need extra practice. Today we’ll be using all three brushes found in Procreate. And don’t forget once you finish this entire video, share it on Instagram, tag me in the image as well as the description so I can find your artwork and feature you here in the next Draw Together video. For this video, I’ve made you a free colour palette just in case you’d like to use the exact same colors I’ll be using in this tutorial. So you can just tap on the link in the video description where you can download and install it. And also below you’ll find a link to the goodie bag where you can grab some free goodies if you haven’t already and support me by visiting my shop.

So alright, let’s jump in and create a new canvas by setting it up at a 4000 by 4000 pixels, 300 DPI, and SRGB. So I’m going to start with my sketch and I’m just gonna go grab my 6B pencil and just figure out where this little guy is gonna be. So we’re gonna do this cup, it might be hot chocolate, it’s probably pumpkin spice. And I’m just gonna start with this simple, well rectangle, but in a shape like that. And we’re gonna have the cup, the little sleeve thingy right there, something like that. Alright. And then we’ll have our little bear, he’s gonna be just peeking over the edge here. Give him a little circle, he’s gonna have his ears here. And I think I’m gonna give him a little whip hat. So that will be fun, ’cause we did that before in that… In one of my packs, a cute little whip hat and I liked that. So this little bear appears in my Happy Fall Y’all Collection. You might have seen him before, I’m sure, in a couple of the past videos. So we’ll have his little paws coming over like that, his little chin over the edge. His ear would be here but I’m gonna give him a little jaunty hat made of whipping cream, yum. Okay so, it’s gonna come over like that. And his little nose is gonna be roughly down there, just something like that, give him some eyes. I think I might’ve gone overboard here with his chin, could be a little bit smaller like that.

I think he’s a little bit more of a square character there, kind of coming in like that. For his ear, I’ll just come and do these little lines there. Yeah. And he’s got a little mouth that goes like a little arrow. Boop, boop. Alright. Good. Okay. So then I’m gonna have the little cinnamon sticks come out here. And maybe one more, something like that, good. Okay. I think we need a little bit of decoration around him too. Oh, he’s got his eyebrows here of course. Alright. Let’s do a little festive, autumn sorts of things here. We’re gonna do some maple leaves like that. Maybe we’ll have something sort of coming up around here, some little leaves. Something like that, and the little maple leaf here. Oops. Maple leaf there, just keeping it pretty loose. That does not look like a maple leaf in the slightest.  Alright, I think I gotta work on my maple leaf game a little bit, I should know how to do this. Something like that. I don’t know what’s wrong with me today and my maple leaves, they look a little bit abysmal. I know what’s wrong, is that this part needs to be smaller. Alright. If you try to do things fast you end up screwing it up a little bit. So there’s those and then we’ll just have a few regular leaves as well. Okay. Good, and I think maybe something like that. I don’t know. Alright. These are not the right shape. I’m gonna make them a little squattier. I need to free-form, there we go. Something like that. Okay.

Alright. Something like that. Okay. I’m just gonna resize this by just clicking on my arrow and just, oops, going back to uniform and just squishy them in again, so I have them centered to some degree. Okay. I think that looks good, and I’m also going to actually put some I did before doing some decorative pumpkin pattern on the cup. So let’s do that. So I’m just gonna need to have them come over like this. That looks not right. And maybe one them over there. Yeah, I’m kinda doing a pumpkin right here. It’s easier if I draw the circle. Just a little pattern of pumpkins. And there. And one about here. Something like that. Maybe one that’s sideways here. Alright. That should be good. I wonder if we should have a little label on here saying pumpkin spice or something? Actually, I could just do this. We’ll do this, hold it, and then we get a nicer oval there.

Yes, I am gonna edit the shape and I’m just gonna move it over a little bit. Maybe just bring it in a touch. Good. Okay. What should we say? We should just say, like I said pumpkin spice. I’m not the best writer, like doing something cute. That’s sort of okay. Trying to make it fun. I’m not a hand letterer. I want it to look a little childish. Perfect. Okay. I think that will work for our sketch layer and stuff. Okay. So next I’m going to start doing some painting. So I’m gonna turn down the sketch layer, gonna turn it way down to maybe 15, maybe 18. Okay. And we’ll start filling in some stuff here. So I’m going to just hit the plus and create a new layer, and I’m gonna go grab my favorite inking brush that is free in Procreate anyway, the dry ink, and I’m gonna start to ink this in a good copy. So here we go. Oops. Terrible, terrible. So here we go, just gonna bring this back down, the size to 8%, 6%. No, 8%, like I said. Okay. 100 opacity and I’m just gonna keep it fairly sketchy. Not too precise.

Alright, It’s Looking Slightly Better, These Little Leaves

Okay. So I’m gonna turn off our sketch there. I wanna keep it because I’m gonna do the pumpkins in white afterwards once we colour this in. So it’ll make more sense later. So, I’m gonna just fill in all the areas that I wanna block out, so I’m gonna make the cup a separate colour, the sleeve a separate colour, excuse me, the bear and so on. So, I’m gonna just start with the bear, and I’m just gonna colour him in the colour he will end up being but I will change him to white in a minute, but you can just use that beige. And then I’m gonna use the studio pen to fill him in. So, the layer, you’ll wanna have that underneath your line work layer.

Okay. Because it’s solid, I can just drag my colour in there, and do that. Then I’m gonna go and do another layer below, and grab the orange. Just carry on with the studio pen. Sorry, the studio pen is a 12 but you can do whatever suits your needs best. Just filling that guy in. Okay. And then I can just drag that in there. I’m gonna go over the top of that, a new layer, and grab this light cream colour to this section. Pop that in. While we have this cream, we can do his hat too. Drag that in. And I’m gonna create another layer below the orange layer here, and get that… What am I gonna do with this colour right beside here? And do the cinnamon sticks. Alright. And then I think I’ll do the leaves as well, so I’m just gonna do one more layer at the bottom. Grab this green colour, just quickly get these leaves here.

This Needs To Be On Top

I’m very messy today. For heaven’s sakes. Okay. Okay, so that’s good for now. We have it all blocked in. Now if you’ve watched before, you know that I’m gonna fill these all in with white, and because I’m going to go and paint them, I don’t want them to just be solid. So I’m just going and clicking on that layer and filling what I had colored just to be white. And for the leaves, ’cause I don’t wanna go and drop each one, I’m just gonna click on the plus sign, click on the layer, click clipping mask. Do that, and then just merge down. A little faster that way. Okay, so now everything is solid underneath, so if I turn off my background layer, you can see it’s like that. And now I can go and do some painting. So let’s start with the bear, I’m just gonna add the plus sign, add a clipping mask, go and grab this brown here, and I’m going to go to, I’m gonna go… What am I gonna do? I’m gonna go into the painting. I can’t see anymore. You’re gonna get the spectra, put it at about 35. Just fill him in, and the clipping mask is just gonna make sure that it all stays on that one layer.

And then I’m going to use the little beige here. Go into the airbrushing, not the airbrushing. I’m gonna go to the spray paints, click that splatter and just giving him a little texture. And then I’m gonna grab that white and bring down my splatter brush all the way to about 12 and just lighten up his nose area, quite a bit. Good. And then I’ve seem to have forgotten to put the pink on here for you, so I will put the pink, and it’s gonna be about there. You wanna gonna go to my painting, you’re gonna grab the… Oh, where are you? Gouache. Have it about five, to give him some little cheeks here. I’m gonna be coloring his ears, just a little pink there too. That looks good. Perfect. That’s good for now. And then I’m going to go to the cinnamon sticks. I’m gonna hit another layer, hit the… Make it a clipping mask and then go and grab this brown here, more of a brown. Let’s stay on the gouache, that’s fine. And bump it up to about 30. Colour that in. Then I’m gonna grab this darker orange here too and just give it a light coat of that as well. Maybe a little bit darker here. Just kinda get… So it’s a little bit of this painted effect. You can bring this down to about 15, and you can get in there a bit.

I think that’s good. Then I’m gonna take this darker brown, and I think we’re still sticking with my gouache. I’m gonna bring it down quite a bit to three. Just gonna give these subtle little lines here, how they go with the cinnamon sticks. Here we go, put a shadow under here. Okay. And then I’m going to… With this I’m gonna go back to my spray paint, get that splatter, leaving it on that dark brown. Just give it a light coat on there, you’ll be bringing it down to about six, giving it a little bit more on the edge just for shadowing. Making that look a little bit more rounded. Okay. And then maybe doing this lighter beige colour, bringing that in there. Actually, I’m gonna bump this up again, making it about 15, and highlighting that a little bit there. Okay. I think the bear needs to be a little bit more solid. I’m gonna go back to this layer here, push the plus sign and just do another coat below that, of that bear colour. I’m going back to the painting, and I’m gonna grab the spectra brush again and just fill that in a little bit more. There. Okay. And let’s go to the cup layer. So I’m gonna click on layer for the cup layer, add a plus, make it a clipping mask, grab that orange and I’m still on my spectra, still on… Or actually, you can do it all the way up for this and just fill that in.

Grab The Gouache

Okay. And then I’m going to grab the gouache, keep it at 3%, three or four. Let’s grab this darker orange and just do the shadow of this lip here, and maybe just a little bit underneath where his paws are. Good. And then there’s gonna be a shadow under here, and then let’s put up this gouache to maybe about 12, I’m sorry that was 15. Just lightly, a little bit more pressure at the beginning, lightly around, we just give it a little bit here. Good stuff. Okay. And then I think we need to do the sleeve. So we’ll click on that, a plus sign, clipping mask, and then I’m going to use this beige colour and let’s see how that goes. And that should be fine. I might need to darken it up a little bit. Actually, let’s just do that. You’re gonna go down and to the right, warm it up a little bit, and see if that’s better. I think that’ll work. Okay. So we’ll add that to here. Lots of beiges today.  So with the same brush, the gouache, we’re just gonna fill that in. Just layering, making it a little bit darker at the edge, again to make it have a little bit more roundness there. Good stuff. Okay. Then I’m just gonna take my eraser and I’m just going to erase the center, so that will be white.

Okay. And then I’m going to use that medium orange, bring down my gouache to about five or six, and just… No, it must be more less than that, so a three. Get in there and just colour this. You want it to look a little bit imperfect because… Well, you can do it however you choose, you just want it to be a little bit more painted, a little bit more hand done, that type of thing. Good stuff. Okay. While we’re here, because the hat is on this layer, I’m gonna go back to this light taupey, beigey colour and still let’s stick with gouache, bump it back up to about 20. Fill this in, so he’s not completely, completely just white. Okay. Then I’m gonna just go grab this colour here, this medium brown, still with the gouache. I’m gonna have this at about let’s say 4% and just bring in some shadows here. Actually, I want this a little bit bigger, 6%. Bring it in there like so, just giving this a little depth or volume, I guess. Okay. And then I’m gonna grab the white, do some highlights. We’ll bring this back to three. Just on the top part, just giving it a little something like that. That’s too much.  Okay. So and it’s looking alright. Now I think we should probably do the little pumpkins that we had before.

So I’m actually going to turn on my layer again and I can’t see it, so I’m going to bring it above that cup layer. Maybe just around here, it doesn’t… Well it can be at the top too, it’s fine. So we can just see it here. So on a layer above the orange layer where the cup is, I’m gonna add another layer, and I’m gonna still be on my white. I’m gonna go back and grab my inking and the dry brush, and I am just making sure I’m on the right layer, and I’m gonna go and just draw these pumpkins, and I am at 8%. Just for a little design. I did this one all funny didn’t I?

I’ll just leave it like that I think. Okay. So now I can turn off that sketch layer since we have those. And I think underneath that layer on that… In between the orange and the white lined layer, if that makes sense. I’m gonna add another one. You can also do it on the orange one if you want. Again, you know me, I like to work in lots of layers so that I can make lots of changes for… If you know, if I wanna do colour changes for people and all that kind of stuff so, that’s why I do it like that. But you can have it all in one layer if you want, and I’m gonna go down to, let’s say four, and I’m going to pick this. I’m just gonna lighten this up a little bit, quite a bit. Yeah. Okay. So I’m gonna add this to those as well, so, this lighter orange. And I do have this as a clipping mask, just so I don’t have to worry about going outside the lines.

Okay. It gives it a little variation for a little bit of interest. Alright. So why don’t we do some of our leaves now. So, let’s go to our leaves layer, add another layer. You can actually also, instead of doing clipping mask, you can do alpha lock on this layer by clicking this in alpha lock. It’ll kinda do the same thing, except you won’t be able to delete it and still have your solid background. So, it’s however you wanna work, that does work as well. Just for my purposes, I like clipping mask. So, I’m going to pick that light green colour and we can stay on gouache. You can go up to about eight, just give it a little colour here. Just lightly, you just layer. So, I think I’m gonna make these some multi-colour stuff, let’s see what happens. Maybe put some of this light yellow, and bring this up to 12. Warm that up a little bit. Fall leaves, only getting the edges. I should be showing you this a little closer, it’d be easier for you. Just like that. Bringing that dark green. Maybe bring this down to four. Maybe not. Six. I’m so indecisive with my sizes today. My goodness. Okay, and then I’m gonna see about this nice red colour. Let’s go and experiment a little bit here. Maybe these guys will have just a touch too.

Alright. I think it’s looking pretty cute. So, I’m just gonna make a couple a changes to, or a couple additions, rather, to the bear here. I’m gonna go on to my line work layer. Go get the dark brown colour, and go to inking. And I’m grabbing that dry ink. I just noticed this, one of his eyes is a little bit too small, first of all. And I don’t understand what’s up. I’m gonna… Switched the wrong layer again. Oops. Okay. And he’s got some… Usually has a few little hairs here. Good. This can be shaded in a little bit more. I’m gonna do another layer on top. Grab the white, give him some little dots here. Put a little highlight on his nose. We’ll give a little highlight on the cap lid there. Maybe here. It’s good. And I’m missing his little polka dots too. Back to the brown. I’m trying to remember what this character looks like. He’s got little freckles here. Can’t forget those.

Okay. So I think that’s probably pretty good. I wanted to show you one thing that I don’t normally show on here, but what you can do just to make your artwork pop a little bit. So, once you’re all done, and you’re happy with everything. I’m just gonna delete that sketch layer. I’m gonna select everything, and I have a lot of layers. I’m gonna group them. Duplicate them, I can’t… Okay, so I’m gonna flatten them. So, now it’s just one image and I can’t change anything. Now, you can duplicate it, go to the end, go to colour burn. And I know that looks a little bit crazy, but bump down the opacity, maybe a 25. Let’s see how that jumps, right? So, sometimes that will give a little extra pop to your work. So, that’s it for today’s tutorial, guys. So, I hope you enjoyed it, and if you did, please hit that like button, and subscribe. And don’t forget to hit the bell icon so you can be notified of new tutorials just like this in the future. I post every single Tuesday. So, I hope you have a wonderful week. How To Draw Pumpkins In Procreate Tutorial

Hi guys, I’m Kris. Welcome to this week’s tutorial. Let’s draw together. In this week’s tutorial, we’re gonna be drawing a pumpkin in Procreate or two pumpkins rather, and I’m sure you can create this too if you follow along with the video all the way to the end. If you feel rushed, be sure to hit that pause button or just rewind to catch up, and save this video to your library so you can rewatch if you need extra practice. So today, I will be using all three brushes found in Procreate. And don’t forget, once you finish this entire video, share it on Instagram, tag me in the image as well as the description, so I can find your artwork and feature it here in the next Draw Together video. For this video, I’ve made you a free color palette just in case you’d like to use the exact same colors I’ve been using during this tutorial. And you can just tap on the link in the video description below where you can download and install it into Procreate. Also below, you can find the link to the goodie bag where you can grab some free design goodies and also support me by visiting my shop there. So, okay, so grab your pen and let’s get to it.

Create this Canvas

I’m gonna create this canvas. It’s gonna be 4000 x 4000 pixels, 300 dpi and RGB. So first, I’m gonna start with getting my pen. I’m just gonna use my 6B pencil ’cause we’re just gonna do our sketch first and then we’re going to paint it in. So I’m gonna do two pumpkins today and add just, yeah, just a little regular circle. You guessed it. Something like that. Just gonna do this really rough sketch. I’m just gonna make him kind of on an angle here like this, and the stem is gonna come out like that. I want it to have a little personality. And then the other one is gonna be a little bit taller and narrower, and he’s gonna come behind like this. Something like that. And I’m just gonna move this down a little bit by using my arrow and just watching it, moving it a little touch here so I can get a different sort of a little stalk in here. Something like that. This guy is just gonna be straight out here. Alright. Already we have something going. We can kinda tell it’s pumpkin-esque. I’m gonna just… I think I’m gonna make that more like that. Actually, I’m gonna use my little squiggly line, a little S curve here. Grab this, it’s on freehand and add, and then I’m gonna push my little arrow and just with the… By using the green toggle, just sort of tilt him this way.

There, I think that’s a little bit more interesting. Okay. So we can bring that down there. I think maybe we’ll just do some leaves around here. Something like that. Maybe we’ll have, I don’t know, some vines, something like this. This part you can play with. You can do whatever you want. I put some leaves in here, maybe some maple leaves and other things too. I don’t know, just dress it up. Have a little fun with it. Just some autumn leaves. Something like that. That gives us sort of an idea of what we are going to create here. Alright. So now that I have a really rough sketch, I’m gonna come in and just make a few more changes like defining our pumpkin a little bit more. So the stem is gonna be sort of on the inside. We’re gonna see just slightly a little bit up the top of this and, as you know, pumpkins have all these lovely ridges, so that’s gonna come down there and around. I love organic things because we can make it up, and it’s not all perfect, and it’s a little bit irregular, and that’s kinda fun. And you’re just gonna have some bumps in the back there. Bringing these around. Something like that. This needs some more thickness here. Something like that, I think. Okay. So this guy, gonna give him, let’s see, lines here, making sure you go up and around here to show that volume.

That Looks Kinda Funny.

I want him to be more square here, kind of sitting on that edge. Okay. Looks good. Maybe we will do some little berry type things. A few more curls on here. Just be really free with it. Have fun. Just doing some little berry businesses here. Full circles. Just trying to keep a… Make some sort of an even composition here.

Alright. I think that’s pretty decent for our first sketch here. That will give us a good base to draw from here, so… Alright. I’m gonna just click on the end, bump back that opacity way down to maybe like, I don’t know, 15%? Then, add another layer on top. And I’m gonna go into my brushes and go onto the painting section and use that Tamar brush. I just started using it and I kind of like it. So I’m gonna grab the orange here, the lighter orange, and I’m gonna paint this front pumpkin here, so… That’s far too big. Let’s just bump it back to 15% and it’s a 100% opacity, and we’re just gonna fill this in.

Keeping it fairly loose right now, just going over it, filling that in. Alright. Good. Now I’m gonna bring it way back to let’s see if 3% does the trick, and I’m gonna start going in those lines we made and just sort of bringing those… Just darkening them up a bit. I don’t like how I did this here. This is not gonna work. Actually, you know what? I’m gonna use my sponge tool, and I’m gonna use it on the… Let’s see. I actually might use it the same, the Tamar brush. My smudge tool will be on the Tamar brush. So I’m just gonna come in here, make it way smaller than I just had it, to 10% and about 80% opacity and just smudge that out. I don’t really like it, and then go back to my pen, my paint brush here and just fix that up a little bit. Okay, that’s better. Alright. Oops. Bringing it in. Okay. So once I have that, I can go and take my smudge tool again. I’m gonna bring it way back to 4% and just… You know what? Maybe five and bring the opacity down to 30. Okay, that’s better. I wanted it a little bit more subtle. I’m just gonna use a circle-y type soft motion just to smooth those out a little bit. Just creating that shadow.

Let’s See What That Looks Like!

Alright. Let’s see what that looks like without that layer. Okay, good stuff. Alright. So I’m gonna go and get the darker purple, no, that’s good, the darker orange and continue with my Tamar and bring this up to about 8%, let’s say, just really lightly start bringing in some shadow. So of course it’s gonna be a little bit darker at the bottom. I’m just doing little circle-ies and just creating a little shadow down here.

I want this to look a little bit painted, so I like having some of the edges. I’m gonna take my smudgy… This smudger and just blend in a little bit here. It is your blending tool but why not call it a smudger? What it feels like right now. Okay, and then I’m gonna go back to my brush, make it a little bit smaller, let’s say around three, just emphasizing those lines a little bit, bringing them partially up.

And just carrying on here, making it a little bit darker at the bottom, a bit more darker in the creases, and blend that out. Okay. It’s starting to take a shape a little bit. I’m just going around the edges. I’m just pushing it up a little bit so it’s not quite so messy on the edges. Okay. I’m gonna go back to my brush, and then starting at the top a little bit. Actually, I need this to be a little bit smaller, so I’m gonna go all the way down to… Well, let’s see two. Yeah, two. Two works. Making it even smaller in here. I’ll come in so you can see a little bit. Even smaller, blending that out, trying to kinda go in the center here, blending, blending. Just alternating between my brush and my blender.

Alright. Just getting some of these guys in the back here. This is gonna… Oops. Good stuff, okay. So then we can go and do the stem. And I think, actually, yeah, I’m gonna use this beige color here and bump up my brush to maybe four and come in and… Oops, not do that, but get in here and color that guy in. Just go back and grab that orange and just make sure that this edge is more defined here on top. I think that’s alright. Go back and get the dark brown, back to my Tamar brush, gonna keep it at four, and just give… Actually no. I’m gonna bring it down to two, just bring in those lines, just that mix of that kind of stalk-like handle here. Okay, then I’m gonna blend it out. Actually, I’m gonna tune out that background layer just so I can see a little bit better.

Back and Forth

Just back and forth. I’m actually gonna bring this down to one so I can get some smaller lines in here. On that a little bit. Not too much. I still want them somewhat line-y. Okay, that’s good for now. I’m actually gonna throw some highlights on this guy, and so I’m going to actually… Let me see if this works. It might not be. Yeah. I think that’ll work. Okay. So the light beige color, bring this back up to four and let’s throw some highlights on him. Just kind of thinking where the light might hit if it were coming from this side. Oops, just went over the line a little bit, didn’t wanna do that. So I’m gonna blend that out, not completely, try and leave the inside of that somewhat still sharp to see edges. Okay. And I’m gonna go and grab my white and just do a little bit more… Actually, bring this back to two. A little bit more of a sharper highlights, just to really make that pop a bit.

And blend that just a touch. Still want it a little bit nose, more vibrant there. Okay, maybe I’ll throw a couple on the stem too. It’s not gonna show up quite as much, but it’s okay. Alright. So now I have one pumpkin looking alright. I’m doing okay. Actually, still gonna go back and take the darker brown, still with my Tamar brush, maybe at about three, and actually, I’m going to have to just darken this up even more here while we’re here.

Alright. I’m gonna blend that in.

Alright. I’m gonna come in with this orange again, darker orange, and just see if I can just merge this a little bit. I’m going to bring it up to five and just warm that up, just a touch. It’s all about the layers.

Okay. And blend that. Let me bring my blender up to about 7%. Good. That’s better. So I’m gonna turn back on our sketch layer and create a layer on top of that, so it’s below this front pumpkin here. And I’m gonna just grab our orange again and grab the Tamar brush, bump it up to maybe 12, 14, 14, and just bring that in here. Just start colouring this up. Just getting that washed down. Okay. And I’m gonna do another layer, so as you pick your pen up, it’ll do a darker layer over top.

Okay. Then I’m gonna bring my brush down to about a four and start bringing in these lines, creating no shadows.

I don’t like the lines I drew underneath before, so I’ll fix them now. It should be a little bit more straight down sort of. It’s still curved.

Come on you. Okay. I’m just gonna blend that out a little bit, slightly. And I’m gonna go and turn off that layer behind ’cause I find that I can see a little bit easier with my line work here. So I’m gonna go and take the darker orange. Yeah, this time I’m gonna do a three and just start making it a little darker. Need a little bit lighter on top, a little bit heavier-handed on the bottom. And then I’m gonna bring my brush up a little bit more to maybe 10 and just start getting some shadowing in the bottom here, just like we did the other one and behind too ’cause there might be a little bit of a shadow there. We also want the two to… ‘Cause they’re the same color, we wanna make sure that we can tell each one apart. Having a little contrast will help.

Bring On The Smudger!

Bringing my smudger down to a four so I can be a little bit easier on these lines here. And bringing it back up maybe to a 10, just blending this a little bit. I still want to have the texture that the brush gives whenever I can, so sometimes you just gotta blend out the edges a touch. Going back to my brush. Going in for another round. Bringing it a little bit smaller, maybe about a six.

Getting in there. Let’s work a little bit on here.

Good. Blending anything out that’s a little bit too hard. Cleaning and getting that nice dark brown and going down to a 2% brush, getting in the middle of those lines there, so we can really get that crease.

Getting my blender, and that’s too big so I wanna go back down to a four, and just gently blending that out.

Just kind of going on one side of it really helps. You can see that little heart. Okay. And let’s see. Let’s bring in… I’m thinking, I actually might try something. If this doesn’t work, I might erase it. So I’m gonna put a layer over top to a clipping mask and click on the end and I’m going to do… Maybe a color burn might work. Let’s see. Let’s see what happens. This is a fun experiment. I’m gonna put my brush up to about 15. That’s not doing anything. Let’s try this color, the darker orange.

Okay. So that’s maybe quite red. Let’s try that, okay. Maybe we’ll do the lighter orange. Bring my brush up to 20%. Do you see how that’s kind of making it red? I’m gonna bring the opacity down to, let’s try 50 and make my brush about 25, just really lightly, just paint over some and see how it’s kinda warming it up. I just want it to be fairly subtle, bringing that back down to about 10, warming it up a little bit in here.

Not Too Red!

Alright. Don’t want it too, too red. Just create a little bit of interest here. Okay. So you can see before, after, before and after. I’m actually going to knock it back just a touch maybe to 70%. That might just give us a little bit more interesting colors there. Okay. So I’m actually gonna merge that now. But just by pinching them together, they will merge. I’ll put my sketch layer back on, and let’s go and actually do the little stem here. I’m gonna grab that beige color. I am back at 5%, and get that in here. Gonna go over it a couple of times just because this brush is a little bit transparent. So I wanted to cover behind there and just gonna go and get that orange again and just make sure that it’s the dominant color over top here. Okay. Grabbing the dark brown, going to 2%, and I wanna turn off this layer again so I can see, and starting to define this stalk. So some scratchy lines.

And smudging those. Oops way too much. Back down to 4%, just blending those lightly. And then I’m gonna grab this again and go down to 1%, and really getting so much more sharp edges here.

Blending some of them a little bit.

Back up to 2%.

Right. That should be good for now. Let’s give them some highlights, and I’m gonna go grab that light beige again on my Tamar brush. I think two might be okay. Let’s see now. I want a 4% and just giving them some light here. And I’m gonna blend that. I’ll try to keep this center but it’s still the way it is but just the edges. Grabbing the white, going to 2%, giving it some more hot spots, I like to think of it.

Something like that. Oops. And then giving those a little smudge, still wanna keep them really noticeable. Okay. So we’re looking all right. Let’s put in some of this extra greenery business going on here. So on a separate layer, I’ll just do it below. Let’s do some leaves and fun stuff. So I’m gonna take my dark green. Actually, I’ll take the lighter green and back to the Tamar brush. I do believe we are at 2%. Let’s go to 4%, and just start painting some leaves.

I’m actually holding down my pen the entire time. So, otherwise, if you see if you do this, and then you hold up your pen and then you go back in, it’s gonna look like that. So if you hold down your brush the entire time, it’s gonna be nice and smooth like that.

Let’s make this actually more of a make-believe look.

I probably should have a few of those. Let’s see. We’ll make one here. Actually, just thinking, I might want this to go over top, so I’m gonna put it to the top, just so I can go over top of this guy here.

Alright. I’m gonna see if this pen would look nice with my favorite as you know, the dry ink brush. I’m gonna use that for these lines here. I’m gonna use the darker green and go and do that. Let’s see. I’m gonna make it at maybe about 8%. And just do these vines here.

Just Use YourImagination

This is the fun part. Keep it loose. Okay. Let’s see what that looks like without our layer. Good. I think that’s alright. Okay. So now let’s make these leaves… Actually, you know what, I’m gonna want to do these little berry things and I’m thinking, let’s see what colors I have. That might be okay. I might as well keep within the color palette. Let’s see, experiment time. Yeah, maybe that’s alright. Okay. So I’m gonna bump up my brush to about 20%. I’m just gonna push… Actually, I’m gonna do them this way, push and then down, push down, make little hopefully little teardrop shapes, something like that. Yeah, I think that’ll work.

Do them in the middle so they overlap so then it looks slightly more realistic kinda.

Alright. Now I’m going to do some more work on these leaves. I think I’m gonna bring this brown or sort of browned, I don’t know, green? Chartreuse color and just sort of, let’s see, shall we outline them? Let’s see what happens if we smudge that. Kind of play with, maybe not. Let’s do the Tamar brush with this. Back to painting, back to Tamar. What do we have? We have a four, maybe just give them a little interest here. And I’m gonna blend it a little bit. Yeah, just to have a bit more of a painted effect, sort of. This is sort of a hybrid of looking a little painted, being a little bit more illustrative, obviously.

This kind of needed to be a little more filled in to cover up that, which is good. Let’s just blend where you need to.

So, I mean, you could leave it like this a little bit, but I’m actually going to go in and make my pumpkin slightly more illustrative, just… Why not? Let’s bump it up a little bit more. So I’m gonna go in with the dark brown, grab my… Go into inking, grab my dry ink again, still with the same size. What am I at here? 28. And maybe just bump up these lines a little bit. Actually, no. I’m gonna go in and we’re actually gonna be quite a bit smaller than that. Sorry, 15%? Nope. Maybe eight, all the way down. Yeah, that’s better. Alright. Just… I’m gonna outline them exactly just bringing in a few parts just to bump up that… Those edges, giving them a little bit more… A little bit more Christmas.

Trying to stay within the lines is always good. Just gonna erase that guy.

I think that’s good, just giving him a little bit more pop.

Ah… Let’s stick on here.

There. And of course, we’re gonna soften them just a touch if we wanted, a few places where that… It could look good.

Nice. Okay. So we can probably go back to the dark green, back with our dry brush still and do a little bit more detail on these leaves, giving them a little bit more of that.

Just a bit more interest. Let’s see if this is all getting done here. Alright, a few final touches. I’m just gonna do a few highlights on these little berry things, whatever they are. Just gonna take my light orange and I’m gonna go on that later and just give them a little highlight here. They’re looking a little flat.

So That’s It, Guys!

I think that’s good for our little holiday pumpkin. So I hope you enjoyed this tutorial, and if you did, please hit that like button, subscribe and don’t forget to hit the bell icon so you can be notified of new tutorials just like this one in the future. How To Draw a Rose Step by Step in Procreate Tutorial

Welcome to this week’s tutorial!

Hi guys, I’m Kris. Welcome to this week’s tutorial. Let’s draw together. In this week’s tutorial, we’ll be drawing a rose in Procreate. And I’m sure you can create this too if you follow along with the video all the way to the end or at the very least, I’m sure you’ll have fun doing it. If you feel rushed, be sure to hit pause or just rewind to catch up and save this video to a playlist, so you can rewatch it if you need a little practice. It is a little bit more of an intermediate tutorial, so don’t be hard on yourself, and pause it, and just work at your own pace. Today, we’ll be using all free brushes found in Procreate. And don’t forget, once you finish this entire video and you’ve completed your rose, to share it on Instagram and tag me in the image as well as the description, so I can find your artwork easily and hopefully you might see it featured here in the next Draw Together video.

For this tutorial…

I’ve made you a free color palette just in case you wanna use the very same colors I’m gonna use today for this drawing. And you can just tap on the link below the video description, and you can download it and install it into Procreate. Let’s get started by grabbing our pencil, and this canvas is going to be 4000 x 4000 pixels, 300 DPI and sRGB. I’m gonna start with just sort of a charcoal color, black. It doesn’t matter. This is for your sketch. And I’m gonna grab my 6B pencil and I’m going to be using it at about 50%. Looks good, and 100 for opacity. Of course, if you’ve been watching so far, we always start with shapes. So I’m gonna start with a circle and that wasn’t a very good one.

Let’s start here.

It doesn’t have to be exact, but since we can just hold on to it, why not? There it is. Nice and circular. And then up here, just in this sort of general area, I’m gonna do, just sort of a little funny shape here and a little squiggle inside. Just kind of like that. It can be any way you want it. A little irregular is just good. And then from there, here I’ll come in a little bit closer. From there, I’m gonna do this little web-like, little lines here. And this one’s gonna swoop around. Maybe we’ll have one over here and maybe one like that. Something like that. Again, this isn’t exact. It’s supposed to be nature, so it’s gonna be a little irregular. And then from there, I’m gonna bring… This guy is gonna go down like that. This guy is gonna go up. This one maybe it’ll go over here like that. This guy is gonna come around. This guy is gonna come here and down sort of like that.

Kind of bring it in like this…

So, and then, this part, you’re gonna kind of bring it in like this. Same here and same with that and then here as well. So you can start seeing how these folds come in. Does that make sense? And this guy would tuck in there. And this one… Actually, you know what? I want him to be a little bit more squiggly, maybe more of an S-curve like that, sort of tucking in there. Alright, that looks good. This would have a line here. And that would have a line there, trying to get it somewhat around, coming in. Like so. Okay. So that’s starting to look like something a little bit. And then, we can have one come up from over here, let’s say in there. Bring that line over here. Tuck in there. I’m just gonna start to just erase some of those circles, so we can see a little better.

Start bringing out some more leaves

Okay. And then I’m going to start bringing out some more leaves here so again make them a little irregular like that. It’s nice to have it tuck into those lying here. Bring another one out here, in there, like so. And I’ll erase this here. Great. Actually, while we’re at it.  Okay. And then let’s do some little… Not quite so wiggly but maybe a little more of some straight-ish lines. I mean, it’s still pretty wiggly. Something more like that. Oops. Then let’s add some… The guy’s coming in here. There’s gonna be like a little straighter, that type thing. Now, I can alt-delete. I’ll erase this for you here. And making sure this is… Sorry. Coming around like that and maybe this guy will have a little edge to him here.

That makes a better shape

And I want these lines to go out a little bit more, just from this angle. I’m gonna delete this line. That makes a better shape there like that, and just develop that line there. Okay. Alright. And then just a few extras around the outside, maybe a little funky one. Actually let me do something a little different, and then… Sometimes I like some ragged edges on them, like so, and then I’m actually gonna make this guy a little bit bigger. Come up here a little bit more like that. Got it, yeah. And then… So from the center, yeah, the center, we can see where… Sorry, where the stem might be here. Something like that. And then some leaves in there, maybe like that. No, I don’t think… I don’t like it going in there.  Maybe it would have some of these little bits come off that greenery stem. Okay, something like that. There, okay, so that looks pretty good. I think this bit is a little bit tall, just if you can see that. So what I’m gonna do, this is another great thing about Procreate that we can do, just because I feel it’s just shifted up a little bit too high as I was drawing it. I’m going to go into my little magic wand and go to liquefy, if I can find it.

There it is!

There it is, down at the bottom. And I’m gonna use the push, and I’m gonna use the size. It’s gonna be about that big, and I’m just gonna just smoosh this top bit down just a little bit, just so that perspective is a little bit better and maybe just raise this up just a touch. Because this is a sketch, this is an easy way just to make some adjustments. Okay, I like that better. It’s just a little bit too high and domey at the top here, so that makes more sense. Okay, so I’m just gonna move it a little bit to the center of our canvas. Okay, so now that my sketch layer is done, I’m gonna go and do another layer and I’m going to use the darker pink and I’m gonna knock the back the opacity just by tapping the N and sliding this down to about 25, maybe even 20 actually. And I’m going to just trace my lines, and I’m going to use the… Oops, not inky. I’m going to use the inking brush and the dry ink, and it’s one of my favorites. I’m going to go and go over these lines here. Actually, I’m gonna bump this back to maybe… Not 2%, that’s far too small.

Just gonna go over my lines

Let’s say 8%. Okay, that should be okay. Alright. So I’m just gonna go over my lines and make sure that I haven’t missed anything here. See, like that.  And you can kind of, again, play with the pressure, nudge to give it a little personality to the lines. I’m gonna give this a little lip, you can do that… Sometimes just by doing that. Actually, I’m gonna bring this down like that. There we go. That’s better. Just bringing them up and around. So this is when you can really define your lines and make those finished decisions for the line work. So I like doing things in layers, always having a rough sketch, and sometimes I even do a rough sketch and then do another layer over the top just to work out some more things and then do another final line work over that. So that’s just a really… If you really wanna get it fine tuned even more. So you never wanna have lines coming like this. Here, I’ll show you. See like this. You don’t wanna have them all converging at the same spot. So what’s more interesting and probably more realistic would be having this come over like this and then that coming in there. That make sense? Hopefully. And actually, I’m gonna do that and then I’m gonna have that come over like that and that there, I think. Alright.

I’m bringing that down. I’m still not too sure about this one, what makes sense. Maybe there. Maybe there. That actually makes more sense. I’m trying to think of where these petals are coming from, so I’ve looked at a lot of flowers  to… Just to remember what they all look like. That’s good. Okay. And then this is good. So you want some straighter ones, some more wiggly ones, some edges here just for variety.

You might have this happen

You might have this kind of happen here. One like that through that roll. Okay, let’s see what it looks like without there. Good. I think that’s making some sense. I’m still weirded out by this. Maybe that’s the… That’s the bit that’s missing is that… Okay, ’cause you want it to be that cup part. You’re trying to establish there and there, so you need those lines going down that would come up from the base because you’re seeing that, part of it not just the top part of the petals. So hopefully that’s got it.

I think maybe that line there to create the bowl. Okay. So let’s get some leaves. I’m gonna do a new layer and get this dark green color here and have a little fun with it, make it a little squiggly. That’s why I love this dry brush. It’s like my favorite brush. [chuckle] Again, just with the on and off pressure, just not doing exact exact lines makes it a little bit more interesting. Oops, that’s not what I wanted. There.

Cause it’s a rose

And these… ‘Cause it’s a rose, you might want to do this. I’m just push, push, push, push, and then it makes the little spikes. Maybe not quite so good on that side.  Oops. That would probably be like that actually ’cause this guy’s gonna come from somewhere. It’s not attached to the other leaf, so you gotta come around there. Maybe that’s a little bit too much of the… Man, something like that. There, that sort of makes more sense. That’s good. Perspective-wise, it’s coming a little bit more towards us. So it’s gonna be shorter and fatter, a little bit wider, so that’s good.

Actually, I’m just gonna like that

Not quite. Okay, cool. So that is the outline of a rose. I think that looks alright. So let’s color it in. So I’m going to just go on the bottom layer, select another layer, writing my plus sign, grabbing the light pink, and I’m gonna grab my studio pen and fill this in. So what I’m doing is just overlapping a little bit. So I keep the fuzzy line and end up with that solid fill on the inside. So what I might end up doing is actually making the solid fill and the rose color the same, but I’m just gonna show it to you this way, and then I’m gonna switch it and do a different type of painting method once we have this solid fill to work with.

Okay. So hopefully, I’ve got it all filled. I drag my color in there, drop it, and there we go. Okay. So I’m gonna do the same for the leaves as well. I’m just gonna create a new layer. I’m gonna use this lighter green and fill this all in. Actually, I’m gonna bring it down below because I want it to be underneath that line. Fill that guy.

Almost done.

Okay. So now that we have our fills, I can show you another way to color it in. That’s a little bit interesting. I’m gonna actually take this pink and I’m going to fill it with white. And I’m going to add another layer. Click on the layer, select clipping mask, so that whatever I do on this layer will only show up what it’s attached to and that would be the layer below. So I’m gonna pick my pink. I’m gonna do the medium pink and I’m gonna select the painting section here. And I’m gonna use the Tamar brush, which looks something like this. Oh, you can’t see ’cause it’s clipping mask. [chuckle] And I’m gonna put it about… Oh, what is that? I can barely see… 40%. And I’m just gonna really lightly, just color over top. And you can see we get just sort of more of a textured look, which is a little bit more interesting, I think. Well, it depends on the application, I suppose, right? So I’m gonna take… Actually, just be adjusting my brush size down to, let’s say, like a four. And then coming in here and doing some shading, just by overlapping these colors and just doing little circles which is kind of a fun way to paint.

So really, I’m just concentrating on keeping the dark that’s closest to the bottom of the petal, if that makes sense, and having the lighter towards the top, just creating that sort of depth a little bit. So of course, with painting it’s… Well, layering and just taking your time and having some fun. There’s no real wrong way to do this. [chuckle]

Something else you can do is actually go in and use a little bit of this green. Sometimes I do this with my watercolors especially and just sort of some of the squiggly petals, I just give it a little dash of green on the edges. I think it gives it a nice touch.

And there, that’s good.

And then I’m gonna go and use this darker color and just continue to layer which I’m gonna bring this down a little bit more to maybe like 2%, so I can get in here a little bit better.

Just picking these little nooks and crannies where you can kind of pop a little bit of darker color in, just kind of gives it some more interest. I’m gonna bring this up a little bit too, to what is that? 4%.

Again of course watching… Or I keep saying again.  You wanna just look at roses, pictures of roses in real life, and just sort of study where the shadows are and the highlights, and that’ll give you a better idea, just usually closer to the bottom and the center.

Made the sides a little bit smaller again. I’m gonna go to a three.

Back to medium pink

I’m gonna go back to this medium pink and just sort of do some little lines like this where maybe some creases would be. Okay. So, and that’s looking all alright. I should probably do something with these leaves a bit. So I’m gonna click on the leaves layer, select another layer, click on that, and put on clipping mask. And again, I’m gonna turn this to white, and I’m going to use that green. Go back to my Tamar brush. Up it to, I don’t know, 45 and just paint away here and give it a little splattering. That’s kind of fun. Play with these brushes. They’re so cool. And I’m gonna use the dark, bring this back down to maybe like five, just so I can kinda get the shadow going underneath there ’cause this leaf would be darker. Maybe the bend there would be like that. This for sure would be darker ’cause we’ve got that shadow from the rose.

That’s looking pretty cool

Okay. So that’s looking pretty cool. And of course, this is the other thing you could do. Let’s just see. Would it be weird if I took off these? Yeah, it would be. It doesn’t really work. Okay. So the other thing we can do is do a bit of align work as well. So I’m gonna go up here, and this will change the look of it a little bit. I’m going to do another layer so we can have this option. Select that dark pink again, go back to my inking and do the dry ink. And I’m just gonna… Oh, sorry. It’s on 8%. So I’m just gonna do some lines just kind where the folds would be. Let’s give it a different look. Kind of how they’re bending… Just gotta think of what direction the leaves and petals are going in.

Just bending them so we can really get that feeling when it’s coming over.

It was a bit easier for me to draw this by hand.

So what you do with these things, just like I was doing over there, you see these little wiggles? If you go to this part of the curve, it really makes it look like more of a fold were coming along there, right? That’s kind of neat.

Okay. So that totally gives it a different kind of look, right? So you can have with or without. And you can also have that sort of look too if you just want a more graphic look. So feel free to play with that, on and off, but right now, I think I’ll keep them all on and I’m gonna do the same to the leaves. So I’m gonna add another layer, grab that darker bit and just put some more detail. Some veins.

Just a few lines.

Just again… I’m playing with that pressure to just make those different line weights. Okay, alright. So there you have it. There’s a few ways. In order to draw a rose, you can just have the outlines, without the fills, or you can have it a little more simplified with less detail, but hopefully, that was helpful for you. So that’s it for today, guys. Great job sticking through it all the way to the end and I hope you enjoyed this tutorial. How To Draw a Butterfly Step by Step in Procreate Tutorial

Hi guys, I’m Kris. Welcome to this week’s tutorial. Let’s draw together. In this week’s tutorial we’ll be drawing a monarch butterfly that’s pink, of course, in procreate, and I’m sure you can create this too, if you follow along with the video all the way to the end, or at the very least you’ll have fun doing it. So if you feel rushed, be sure to hit pause or rewind to catch up and save this video to a playlist so you can re-watch and get some extra practice in.

We’ll Be Using Three Brushes

So today we’ll be using all three brushes, just found in procreate, and don’t forget, once you finish this entire video and you’ve completed your butterfly, to share it with me on Instagram and tag me in the image as well as the description, so I can easily find your art work and hopefully, you might see it featured in the next draw together video. So let’s get to it. So for this tutorial, I’ve made you a free palette just in case you’d like to use the exact colors I’ll be using for this drawing today, and you can just tap on the link in the video description below, and so you can download it and install into procreate. Alright, so let’s jump in and grab your pencil and set up your canvas, I’ll be creating this one at 4000 by 4000 pixels, 300 dpi and sRGB.

So what I’m gonna do today actually is a little bit different because we’re drawing a butterfly, that’s relatively symmetrical, so I’m gonna show you how to use the drawing assist feature for our sketch, so I’m gonna go and just get a black color… That’s fine. Doesn’t really matter what color, gonna go to my pens, gonna go to the sketching section, get my wonderful 6B, I’m gonna have it at… What is this? Let’s say around 50%, 100% opacity. And next, I’m going to go over to my wrench, click on that, go to Canvas, switch on the drawing guide, and then I’m gonna go… You’ll need to make sure that you go into the edit drawing guide and see here there’s 2D grid isometric perspective and symmetry, so we want the symmetry one.

I’m gonna have the opacity at 25%, the thickness at 50, that’s just the line, if you can see that in between there and the opacity, that’s what that is displaying there, so we can just have it at 25, whatever your personal preference is there, it won’t adjust or have too much effect on your drawing there, and then click the options and make sure you have vertical checked and assisted drawing on as well.

Keep this one off. Alright, so I say done. And so now this layer will say assisted, so you can turn that on and off by clicking on it and clicking on and off the drawing assist, but for this, we do want it on. Okay, so what this does is super fun, it draws the same thing on the other side, yay, so that you can see why that’d be really useful for this butterfly, so let’s get to it, I just accidentally turned it off .  Okay, so I’m gonna go and start with the body, and for that it’s just gonna be a little head like that, you can see that, and then it’s gonna be a little sausage shape like that. Right. Okay, so then we know his little turner gonna be around here somewhere. Actually maybe a little bit more like that. Something like that.

Start The Wing Shape

And then I’m gonna start the wing shape, so kinda come around like that. So there’s that wing. And then this one is gonna come around like that. So you can play around with those shapes a little bit, so that is our sketch layer, so I’m gonna actually go click on the end, slide down the opacity and because I kinda want it to be a little bit more, I don’t know, a little bit more painterly, I guess would be the expression, I’m actually not gonna use the drawing assist again, I just wanted that for my sketch ’cause I want it to look slightly irregular, but at least we have something that is perfectly symmetrical to start from, so actually I’m gonna just make this a little bit smaller, I’m just gonna click on my arrow and just bring this in a little bit, put them back in the middle there.

Okay, so on a new Layer, I’m gonna start with this charcoal color, and I’m gonna get my favorite inking brush which is my dry ink brush, and then I’m going to set it at… Let’s see, that’s probably pretty good at around 10%, I can make it to show you, there we go, where it says 10%, opacity 100%, and then I’m just gonna start making some lines. Actually, I’m not sure if I want that line to come back in so let’s do this. I’m gonna end it there ’cause I’m gonna make some decisions with the pattern. And again, just playing with the pressure on my pen to create slightly different lines and this guy will outline the whole way.

Okay. I wanted those to be slightly off too, that’s enough, exactly perfect. So I think I’m gonna actually go back to my assisted drawing layer and pull that up a little bit and make the designs on those wings, ’cause actually, I do want those to be… Well, again, I only just draw them once, why not? It’s so much easier. So I’m just gonna go back to my sketching pencil, and I’m gonna draw in the details, so you can have fun with this, it can be whatever pattern you want.

Something like that.

And you can just play with this until you have all your designs in. I like butterflies there, there’s no real major rules too, you just have fun.

Okay, that’s probably enough. So again, I’m gonna bump this back down to about 25%, go back to my line layer here, so I think all this work here, I’m gonna have it in block, so I’m gonna keep on with the charcoal color and use my dry ink brush again and just go through and make all these line here.

Always Use a Reference Guide

And of course, you can always use a reference guide to just get some ideas for some interesting patterns.

Here we go.

Okay, I’m going to just bump up the size of my brush to about 60, just so I can get in here and color this, and I want it to be kind of scratchy like that.

Okay I’m just gonna erase this a little bit. Good. So, I’m gonna bring that back down to 12. Oops, that would be my eraser. Bring it down to 12. Just bump up that line a little bit. Alright, and now for the other side, maybe I’ll speed this up a little bit for you, but like I said, you can do this actually with the drawing assist on, then you wouldn’t have to do it twice, but because I want mine to look a little bit more regular, just those little extra little added bits, just looks like it’s not as digital and just a little bit more hand-done.

Do The Rest of The Wings

Okay. So now, I’m gonna go and do the rest of the wings. I’m going to do another layer, and I’m actually gonna go below that layer, below the black layer and get a new layer by hitting the plus sign. And then, I’m going to… Actually, I’m gonna use… I’m gonna fill this in with white. So I’m gonna change my color, my background color to this pink color, so we can see. I can go to my brushes select my studio pen and fill this in here. So I’m just gonna draw around where the black is, and you won’t see it yet, but there it comes just so we’re overlapping. So I’m gonna drag the white in and fill. Same on the other side. Drag it in and fill.

Now We Have White Wings

Okay, so now we have white wings. I’m gonna change this back just to white. Now, I know you can’t see anything, but we can hide our sketch layer for now. And we can put a layer by hitting plus sign above our white layer, clicking on it and clicking clipping mask. So then, I’m gonna go and take my pink color here, my mid-tone pink. Click on our brushes and go to painting, and I’m gonna select fresco. And I’m gonna bump it all the way up top to the biggest brush, but I’m gonna use a really light pressure on my pen because you can do this, or you can just layer it up. Just really gently, giving it some of the interesting texture, if you can see that. Okay, and then I’m going to go and select the darker pink, and I’m gonna put my brush down to maybe about 40%. Just gonna get some little pair of little patterns. Just trying to make it look a little interesting. Actually I don’t like that circle in the middle.

Okay, and again, I’m gonna bring my brush down even smaller. Let’s see. Even smaller than that to about five. I’m gonna come in here and do a little bit more, more details here. I think it gives it a really nice effect. Oops, that last little bit I don’t like. Testing little circles. Just layering it up. So a little bit too much pressure there. So I think you can see it looks pretty similar, but still there’s enough little inconsistencies, so it’s not completely robotic, and that’s what I was hoping for, so that looks good. Okay, and then I can go and take this white color and maybe just bring in some highlight, or just lighten it up a little bit. It actually doesn’t make too much effect on it, to be honest. Okay, that’s fine. Alright, then I want to do my white a little more details. So I’m gonna put a layer on top of the black layer. I’m actually gonna turn this black layer off and pop back on my sketch and turn off this white layer as well, just so I can see. And I’m going to… We will turn this background on again, just so we can see ’cause this will be white. So let’s grab our white and grab our dry ink again and come in and let’s be at, let’s say, 25… Maybe 15%. And then these are not gonna be perfect, they’re just gonna be irregular a little bit.

I just put a few flecks in just to have a little bit more detail. Okay, let’s just see how that’s looking. You can see that’ll look cool.

Let’s Turn Back On Those Layers

Okay so let’s turn back on those layers. And we’ll turn this back to white. And I can see I need to fix this a little bit ’cause I know it came down there, okay. Okay, great. So now we can turn off that sketch layer, probably for good. And then I’m gonna come in and do the body. And you know what? I will just make it solid black. Okay, let’s pump this back up to about, I don’t know, 50% Color this body in.

Okay, I think it’s looking pretty good. I’m gonna go back to my white layer, select that, select the white, bring my ink brush down a little bit to about 15%. I’m gonna give them a little details down the side? That’s probably good. Alright. Alright, I think I’m gonna just go and add a couple more things on my dark layer, I’m going to go and just get that charcoal and just make a few alterations. I’m gonna fill that in. I think I like that small, okay. I’m going to my white layer and I get to grab the white. I think I’m just going to do a few more.

That’s It!

Alright. So that’s it guy’s, great job hanging in there all the way to the end. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial. And if you did, please hit that like button, subscribe, and don’t forget to hit the bell icon so you can be notified of new tutorials, just like this one in the future.
